- We caught up with Mark Baber, Assistant Product Manager, Lumix G, Panasonic UK, to talk about the new Lumix GX7. Among other things, he explains why Panasonic used an LCD rather than an OLED viewfinder for the camera, and also reveals why it produces the best image quality of any Lumix G-series camera to date. Ultimate Picture Quality
The DMC-GX7 realizes high-quality image recording with real-to-life details through excellent resolution image rendering and color reproduction. Panasonic developed new 16.00-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor that achieves both higher resolution and higher sensitivity image recording with less noise in comparison with the predecessor DMC-GX1. The Venus Engine features its advanced noise reduction systems which make it possible to remove large block of noise which was formally hard to detect and helps produce clear, smooth image especially for the nighttime scenery. The combination of the new Live MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves max. ISO25600.
2764K-dot Equivalent High Resoultion Tiltable Live Viewfinder
The newly integrated 90-degree tiltable LVF (Live View Finder) boasts 2764K-dot equiv. high resolution for more free composition and higher visibility. The LVF of the DMC-GX7 uses a display device based on the field sequential system to achieve a high color reproduction of approximately 100%* using AdobeRGB as a reference. By more faithfully reproducing the primary colors, it is able to display beautiful hues that are extremely close to nature, such as deep red roses, vibrant hibiscuses, and ripe, colorful fruit. For this viewfinder, Eyecup DMW-EC1 made of elastic material is sold separately to enhance comfort in viewing either with naked eye or with glasses.
Fast and Accurate Light Speed AF
The LUMIX G adopts Contrast AF for its focus system. Compared with the Phase difference system AF, the Contrast AF boasts higher accuracy especially in shooting with bright lens with small F value. The DMC-GX7 also features high-speed Light Speed AF, making it possible to capture even the fast-moving subject clearly. The camera and the lens exchange the digital signal at max. 240 fps to minimize the time to focus.
Change the Lenses - Image Stabiliser in Camera Body
Panasonic has been integrating POWER O.I.S. / MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabiliser) in the digital interchangeable lenses to suppress blur caused by hand-shake. To further enhance usability, the DMC-GX7 incorporates Optical Image Stabiliser in the camera body which works as effectively as the MEGA O.I.S. for the first time in LUMIX DSLM cameras. Not only the digital interchangeable lenses without image stabiliser but also classic lenses can be mounted to enjoy blur-free photography.
1920 x 1080p Full-HD Video Recording in AVCHD and MP4
The DMC-GX7 also features full HD 1920 x 1080, 60p (60 Hz) / 50p (50 Hz) smooth, high quality video recording in AVCHD Progressive and MP4 with stereo sound. The practical full-time AF and tracking AF is available in video recording, too. The cinema-like 24p video with the bit rate of max. 24 Mbps or P/A/S/M mode provide richly expressive afterimage with overwhelming image quality. The motion picture quality is greatly improved thanks to the new Digital Live MOS Sensor, too.

About Me Getting started
Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX7 Digital Camera with 14-42m:
Bought to replace an aging Nikon DSLR and a newer compact Canon PowerShot which I was never entirely happy with. I am very pleased both with the excellent quality of the pictures from the GX7, and also its build quality. It is also very easy to use. The controls are well placed and the camera is pleasingly light weight (in a good way), meaning that I take it out with me far more frequently than my old DSLR.The Electronic View Finder has fantastic image quality. It also tilts up, which is useful as I have found it more comfortable to use it slightly tilted up. The tilting LCD screen also makes it easy to compose shots when shooting from the hip or overhead. It also hugely useful that the LCD screen is touch-enabled and can be used to change camera settings. The 14-42 kit lens is very versatile for general travel, family and landscape photography and I have been very pleased with using this lens so far. I have found it doesn't work quite so well for very close macro shots or longer distance wildlife shots but of course other lenses are more suited for these purposes. The only very minor con I can find to comment on is that the EVF does tend to display a rainbow shimmer when panning very rapidly. This has made no difference to my enjoyment of using this superb camera.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
I purchased this camera to replace a canon EOS-M which I had never really got on with. This camera is a joy to use and takes excellent photographs with ease. It has all the advanced features I need and a fantastic panoramic mode. The camera is very lightweight and easy to use. Good range of lenses although some are a bit pricey. As the camera has in-body stabilisation it is possible to use Olympus lenses with the camera. My favourite so far has been the Sigma 19mm f2.8 which was a bargain at about £100 and is a great prime lens for the price. Wish I had purchased a lumix the first time round but so happy I now have one.

About Me Casual user, Getting started
Returning to photography after 45 years. Wanted to learn again and this gives camera me the opportunity to do so. Manual settings for when I have time to ponder but auto settings when I need to act quickly. Quality of camera and images excellent. Compact, looks good and easy to use.
Bought it as a travel camera and it hasn't disappointed one bit I would recommend to anyone wanting a small system for travel and lightness

Pleased with Panasonic GX7
I've been using Canon gear for decades, main camera just now is the 650d but wanted something smaller and lighter for travel and everyday usage. Also, I enjoy snapping my young grandchildren. I found the results with the Canon G11 which I had bought for that purpose were very hit and miss, mainly miss! By the time the camera had focused and fired the kids had turned away. Last year I bought the Canon G1x expecting faster focusing and less shutter lag but for quick moving subjects it was only marginally better. I decided about one month ago to buy the Panasonic GX7 and I have not regretted my decision. It came with a kit zoom (14-42 I think) but I was also within the time frame for Panaasonic's free lens promotion so I also got the 20mm f1.7. So far I have been very pleased with the camera. It is much more responsive than the Canon quality compacts. The 40 frames per second is amazing for capturing the kids playing, eg. Yesterday sliding down a Shute into a paddling pool, the video is great and the controls, once you are accustomed to them, are very good and tactile. Also the EVF is a big improvement on the tiny ones on the Canon compacts. I am still learning what this camera can do. Image quality I would put on a par with the Canon 650d. The only area where I have been a little disappointed is in the flash performance with the matching mid-range Panasonic flash I bought to go with camera. It's better/quicker than the equivalent Canon G1x/Canon flash pairing but a little less pleasing than against the Canon 650d/Canon flash combination - a little flatter, less saturated results (when the flash is bounced for informal people pictures). My overall assessment is that the Pansonic GX7 is an excellent camera. Recommended!
