The Pentax 50mm f1.4 SMC FA Lens is a quality fast aperture prime lens. On film cameras the 50mm focal length offers roughly the same field of view as the human eye, and on digital cameras with APS-C size sensors this lens becomes a useful portrait lens with a focal length equivalent of 75mm (in 35mm film terms). Either way, the maximum aperture of f/1.4 offers superb low-light performance and fantastic softness in the out of focus areas of the photograph, another quality that lends itself well to portrait work. What's more, the FA 50mm F1.4 lens features the acclaimed Pentax smc multi-layer coating to lower surface reflection, reduce ultraviolet rays and deliver clear, high-contrast images, whatever your subject.

One of the best "nifty fiftys"
Comments about Pentax 50mm f1.4 SMC FA Lens:
Where do I start? Well its the quintessential Fifty that us older togs got when buying a camera before the dreaded kit zoom replaced it.However, don't let that put you off, the fifty has an avid following no matter what make of camera you have. Before digital, its field of view was more or less what your eye saw, however with the advent of APS-C sensors and their "crop" factors, it is now considered a short tele with an effective field of view of a 75mm (it's still a 50mm remember). Now this lens, is it any good? Well the short answer is Of course it is! Very sharp, if a little soft wide open, but use that to its advantage especially with portraits. It is nice and light, well made and even the AF is quick albeit noisy. CA is there up to F2.8 but either use it creatively or get rid in post processing. It does not come with a lens hood, however buy a rubber hood cheaply, and you are sorted.Downsides.Not mutch, that CA wide open. The Sigma 50mm F1.4 is cheaper and has better control of CA.The 55mm DA* is more, but has the bonus of sealing and SDM focus. It is the most expensive fifty bar the Canon F1.2, Olympus 50mm F2 Macro and Leica's.Finding a polorisor of 49mm is difficult.I was lucky to get mine for £150 (pre credit crunch) which is a much better price. One Big advantage over the Sigma and 55mm is that you can use this lens on film bodies, which is a BIG bonus if you still shoot film.Sum up.In spite of the price, this is still one exceptional lens and a worthy addition to the camera bag.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
