Comments about Pentax 55-300mm f4-5.8 ED WR DA Lens - Black:
An excellent lens for casual wildlife photography, being well built, weather resistant and with good sharpness and contrast. Best used with centrefocus point or else it can can hunt, racking between close focus to infinity and generally shutter speeds of 1/250 or faster. Well recommended.

Pentax 55-300mm f4-5.8 ED WR DA Lens – B
This lens was supplied by Wex Photographic and I have had it for about a month now. Wex's service was excellent and the lens arrived promptly, very securely packed and in perfect condition. I have used it with a Pentax K-5 II S DSLR camera and it has given excellent results, with well-balanced colours and crisp images. It is weatherproof, like the camera, so will serve in almost all conditions. The lens is in black, matching well with the camera body. Attaching it has a good, secure feel. It comes with a reversible hood that has a circular aperture, rather than a tulip-shaped aperture, so there is no compensation for corner-effects. The hood does however have an access door, which allows you to rotate a polarizing filter without having to remove the hood. Manual focus is light and easy. Autofocus is quite fast, and feels very robustly engineered. Zoom grip is very satisfying, and again the slightly heavy engineering means that there is absolutely no tendency to focal length slippage even when the camera is held vertically up or down. The focal length range of 55-300mm is very flexible, making the lens a one-size-fits-all piece of equipment for a wide range of subjects. The maximum of 300mm is equivalent when used with a DSLR camera to a film SLR focal length of about 400mm at full stretch. The only negative feature of this lens is the rather noisy autofocus mechanism. In normal environments this does not matter, and even adds an authoritative sound to the taking of a photograph. In the silence of a bird-watching hide however it sounds rather loud. The results are very sharp indeed with good colour balance, as can be seen from the examples shown. Unless you require silent picture-taking this is a lens you should seriously consider. As long as the lens continues to produce images like these I have no plans to part with it.

About Me Getting started, Hobbyist/Enthusiast
This lens is not a stellar performer but it is a reasonable and durable 300 for the money.Like many testers I've discovered the drop off in light transmission across the frame - particularly when fully extended. Likewise, the sluggish AF - probably as a result of the former. It is light enough to carry in a small backpack bag or even messenger bag - just don't try walking with it around your neck.I've found that I can get slightly better AF performance using centre weighted metering and putting my chosen subject in the centre of the frame.Bottom line: If you don't need weather sealing there are better 300s out there. I am able to live with the limitations because of its durability.
