Pentax K-5 review

Pentax K-5 Review

February 2011 - I have a special place in my heart for Pentax. It’s what started my journey into the world of photography. I jumped on board when WEX asked me to test the new Pentax K5, hoping to bring back some early photography memories and try out a new DSLR. Read our full Pentax K-5 Review...

Pentax K-5 main features

High-resolution, low-noise, true-to-life image reproduction

Pentax K-5 incorporates a new generation CMOS sensor, combined with the reliable PRIME II Imaging Engine, which produce high-resolution, rich-gradation digital images.

The K-5 also offers a wide sensitivity range, from ISO 100 to 12800, which can be expanded to ISO 80~51200. As the Analogue/Digital conversion is done within the sensor, the K-5 features impressive noise management.

Responsive, high-precision autofocus system

The K-5 embeds the same new-generation SAFOX IX+ autofocus system as Pentax 645D Medium Format camera, which features 11 sensor points (with 9 cross-type sensors in the middle) to assure pinpoint and fast focus.

K-5's new-generation sensor combined with high performance autofocus algorithms ensure accurate and quick contrast AF operation during Live View shooting. With the addition of a Golden Section display, the K-5 offers a choice of three different grid patterns to aid image composition.

Continuous shooting at 7 images per second

The K-5’s high-speed continuous shooting mode records up to 22 images (in JPEG recording format) in a single sequence at a maximum speed of 7 images per second, allowing you to take sharp pictures of active, fast-moving subjects.

Recording of Full HD-proportion movies

The K-5 captures beautiful, true-to-life movie clips in 16:9 Full HD proportions at a frame rate of 25 frames per second. This extends many of the benefits of high-quality SLR photography to the world of movie shooting. For instance, reduce the depth of field to make a subject stand out, or use different interchangeable lenses to create distinctive visual effects. The K-5 also allows you to add specific visual effects during shooting.

Compact, solid, functional camera body

The K-5 is exceptionally solid and durable, with a body of sturdy yet lightweight magnesium alloy, and a chassis of highly-rigid stainless steel. Thanks to the inclusion of 77 special seals, it also boasts a dustproof, weather-resistant and cold-resistant (-10°C) construction, assuring reliable operation even in harsh environments.

Bright, clear viewfinder with 100% coverage

The K-5 features a pentaprism finder with a 100% field of view which provides great visibility in outdoor shooting and improves the accuracy of focusing and image composition. It also comes with the renowned Natural-Bright-Matte focusing screen to assist you with manual-focus operation.

Shake Reduction mechanism with user-assisting options

The K-5 features the Pentax-Shake Reduction, which effectively compensates the effect of camera shake by up to 4 shutter steps to produce sharp, blur-free images. This innovative mechanism works with all Pentax lenses — even those designed for analogue cameras. The K-5 also features an auto level compensation function to assure effortless adjustment of horizontal alignment, and a composition adjustment function to automatically compensate for the camera’s inclination during handheld shooting — vertically, horizontally, and in the direction of rotation.

Large 3.0-inch wide-view colour LCD monitor

The K-5 features a large, high-resolution colour LCD monitor with 921,000 dots. Its wide-view design assures a clear view of the monitor image from 170 degrees horizontally and vertically.

Innovative image-processing functions to produce distinctive photographic expressions

  1. Custom image function for distinctive finishing touches
The K-5 offers a choice of 9 Custom Image modes, which allows you to easily select a desired finishing touch for a particular image in order to more faithfully express your creative intention or emphasize the prevailing atmosphere.
  2. Digital filters function
This function allows you to process recorded images and produce highly creative visual expressions without the need of a computer. You not only have a choice of 18 different filters, but can also apply different filters one after another to a single image to create more visual effects.
  3. Cross process mode with three options
The K-5 features the unique Cross process mode, in which the camera automatically shifts photographic parameters for each exposure to create eye-catching images with unique, dramatic colours — just like pictures treated with the cross process in film photography.
  4. HDR (High Dynamic Range) function
The K-5 features the HDR (high dynamic range) function to create one composite image with an extra-wide gradation range from 3 images with different exposures, without requiring a computer.

Other features

  • Electronic level function, with a newly added tilt confirmation tool.
  • Extended-exposure NR (Noise Reduction) function, with a choice of Auto, On and Off modes.
  • High-sensitivity Noise Reduction function, with a camera-dependent Auto mode and a user-adjustable reduction strength preset for each ISO setting.
  • RAW/Fx button, for single-action switching of image file format, as well as for assignment and instant recall of a specific function.
  • 77-segment multi-pattern metering system for extra-accurate light measurement.
  • Dust Removal II mechanism, to shake dust off the CMOS image sensor as effectively as any other dust removal device.
  • Long battery life, for recording of 980 images with full recharge.
  • User-friendly Hyper control system, to flexibly and accurately respond to the photographer’s creative intentions.
  • Dynamic-range expansion function, to compensate for both overexposed and underexposed areas.
  • Automatic compensation of distortion and lateral chromatic aberration (available with DA-,DFA- and FA Limited-series lenses).
  • CTE mode, to automatically adjust the white-balance level to emphasize primary colours of scenes.
  • Attachment of copyright credits on recorded images.
  • D-BG4 Battery Grip (optional) for extra power supply with an exclusive rechargeable lithium-ion battery or six AA-size batteries.
  • Colour-specific control buttons/dials for easy recognition and quick access, based on the universal colour design.
  • Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 software package, including a RAW-data processing and browser application (based on the popular SILKYPIX RAW data processing engine developed by Ichikawa Soft Laboratory) and a browser application.

Pentax smc DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR lens

Comments about Pentax K-5 Digital SLR with 18-55mm WR Lens:

I have been looking for a dSLR that has the following significant components
Durable and well constructed, weatherproof, medium sized, reasonably priced.

As far as I am concerned the K5 has those qualities, my first foray into the dSLR world was the Olympus E1, which also had those qualities.

As an avid outdoors photographer, they are important to me.

I first used Pentax when I had an mx and K1000, I always appreciated Pentax optics, so a return to the fold.

In the short time that I have been using the K5 it has not disappointed me

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great camera upgraded from a Pentax k100d to the K-5 and so glad I did, If you have a basic Pentax camera and have grown out of it, the K-5 is the way to go, and I can still use my old lenses so no need to spend more money. Great in low light. Go on do it you wont be sorry.

Comments about Pentax K-5 Digital SLR with 18-55mm WR Lens:

took a long time to decide it was either the pentax k-5 or nikon d7000 after many reviews and several phone calls the pentax won after a call to local photo shop and a nikon use advised me he was a nikon fan and alway will be but with the choice he told me to go for the pentax,
i use it mainly for macro , and buildings and some landscape photograpy

ok a few days in and i was thinking what have i bought but after turning all the options in the camera to off the image quality jumped out , dont get me wrong its nice to have all the settings but sometime the camera helped to the point where it degraded the image quality,
it come with the kit lens , and as kit lens go used at f8 in good daylight or flash images are the best i have seen from a kit lens , yes pentax haven't as many lenses to chose from but the list is getting bigger , i chose a 35 mm prime pentax and its great for buildings landscape and portraits, its very sharp down to 2,8 but i find its better at f 4,

and also i got the sigma 70 macro lens and this gives really clear sharp images , being honest i find the shake reduction is better turned off for macro as it can cause some image blur when working so close , this isn't just pentax all the other stabilization macro system seem to be better turned off to .

what more well it feels good in the hand and nice being all metal the camera is very well made and looks like it will stand the test of time , the 77 water and dust seals prover to work as i got caught out in our loverly summer and the camera got a bit wet it lots of heave rain and the camera didn't even notice

i sold my canon 7d and thinking i would regret it i haven't, the photos are as good and some are better than photos taken on the canon 7d

the size of the pentax is just great small but packs a punch im all for smaller cameras and pentax k5 is just the right size

the menus could be better as there are menus in menus

took me a while but i found most things

other than all this i cant find much i don't like now i have had the camera about a week and have got use to , i was a canon fan but pentax has taken me away from canon

im a happy pentax user now and for a good build quality very good image quality(when you turn of all the help) and a joy to use its quieter the nikon d90 canon 7d and canon 50d so its ideal to use in quiet locations like churches without drawing attention to your self

over all i would recommend the pentax k 5 its a great camera ,
it might not be as well know as other makes
but performs as good if not better than competitors

Comments about Pentax K-5 Digital SLR with 18-55mm WR Lens:

This camera is brilliant! After using the D7000 the picture quality that you get out of the Pentax k-5 is that bit better and also the features of the k5 generally surpass those of the d7000 (e.g. HDR in the camera body). The only down side is the auto focus is not quite as sophisticated as the d7000, this is not a problem unless you require rapid auto focus e.g. for sports. However buying an slr is not all about the camera body these come and go, so what worried me before buying this camera was that there are not as many lenses to chose from in comparison to Nikon or Canon. I need not have worried there is plenty of good glass available for this camera particularly if you like high quality pancake lenses which make the camera small and unobtrusive whilst maintaining high image quality.

So in conclusion this camera has the highest rated crop sensor of any SLR, an impressive set of features, high quality lenses, and a price tag 1/3 less than the d7000. Unless you already have a large amount of Nikon glass why would you want to buy a Nikon?

Fantastic kit, High iso is great, no noise at 6400 iso. Quick af. Fast fps.superb quality build, ergonomic. Colours on pics are fantastic. The 18-55mm wr kit lens is a real surprise.took some still life flower shots in natural light, pics were really sharp, crisp and so much colour. Also got the 60-250 f4 da lens which is fast and great quality. All the kit looks really smart aswel. I,m going to replace my nikon d300 for another k5 as a spare. It's also weatherproof. Quite fancy the pancake lens next.pop up flash is powerful too. Can,t fault it. The only thing is the buffering, it takes ages for the pics to show on the screen, not sure if I have set it up correctly or not?

Comments about Pentax K-5 Digital SLR with 18-55mm WR Lens:

I've been using a Nikon D300 outfit for weddings and portraits for the last 2/3 years very happily. For my own use I've had the Panasonic GF1 and an Olympus EP1. That's a lot of money in two outfits so I decided to look for something smaller than the D300 as well as being new and improved. The K5 ticked all the boxes so everything went and the Pentax outfit was bought.

I could go on forever about it but will cut it down to... this camera is fantastic, image quality has come a long way since the D300 which to this day is excellent. I upgraded the kit lens with a view to keeping it as an emergency back-up but I'd be happy using it on a wedding as the build quality is spot on and the image quality isn't bad at all. Not only that it is weather proof.

I don't miss the micro 4/3s as to be honest I seemed to go through phases of getting "duff" shots and I've bettered the performance and image quality of the D300 in a much smaller package so I'm very happy. High iso image quality... who needs a flash!

Comments about Pentax K-5 Digital SLR with 18-55mm WR Lens:

Have had my Pentax K5 for over a week now and love it! Am keeping my K7, but the K5 is in another class in terms of ISO and low light photography. I think Pentax have got it right with the K5 and I can see a lot of people opening their eyes to this model. I would really recommend
demoing the K5, I think you will be very shocked at just how good this camera is.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
