PocketWizard MiniTT1 - Canon Further Details

The MiniTT1 Transmitter is easy to use; just slide in place and begin to shoot. The new PocketWizard ControlTL™ System interprets the complex E-TTL II data being sent through the camera’s hot shoe and digitally transmits it in a reliable radio signal. Change the flash compensation dial on the camera, and those commands pass seamlessly through the system to your remote flash. Adjust your shutter speed, aperture or ISO and the system corrects for those changes. A ratio command set on the flash or command unit passes through the MiniTT1 to set the remotes. PocketWizard ControlTL radio communication allows you to shoot farther, faster, around corners, through walls even at high noon in bright daylight. Now you can deploy a wireless flash system wherever you want, without infrared limitations, in seconds.

Use the MiniTT1 for standard triggering with any PocketWizard Receiver including the FlexTT5, PlusII or MultiMAX. When used this way with a digital camera, you can take advantage of PocketWizard’s HyperSync Technology that allows up to 1/500th of a second camera sync with many camera/strobe set-ups. HyperSync allows you to advance the timing of your flash trigger so that faster than X-sync speeds can be achieved. Need more speed? Push your ControlTL system beyond 1/500th and go into FP/High-Speed Sync mode automatically. No buttons to press or settings to change other than your shutter speed will give you flash sync all the way to 1/8000th.

A new PocketWizard Utility program is provided to support the MiniTT1 via a USB port. The Utility allows you to configure your channel settings, dial in your HyperSync timing, adjust your sleep-mode timers and update your product to the latest firmware.

Comments about PocketWizard MiniTT1 - Canon:

The only problem I found is that without walls to bounce the signal, there are problems triggering flash outdoors over distances over 10m. This sort of defeats the point behind the product. Nevertheless it is possible after several attempts to get the flash units to trigger, you just need to be patient.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about PocketWizard MiniTT1 - Canon:

For to long I was getting frastrated with infra red triggers not firing and flashes out of range from the transmitter.

Pocket Wizard put an end to all of this!!! I was able to pace the flashes in areas where I wanted to light, which was previously not possible when using the infra red trigger system.

The HyperSync Technology is also fantastic, giving you allow shutter speeds as high as 1/500th second. This is great when shooting fast action on location.

Comments about PocketWizard MiniTT1 - Canon:

I got a Mini TT1 and a Flex TT5 combo yesterday. They are easy to set up and use in the basic trigger mode.

I have yet to try them on anything more complicated, but so far the indications are that it will be simple to do.

PocketWizard now do a configuration utility which you can download from their web site. You'll need this to get the best from them in case there are any firmware updates. I checked mine and they were at the latest release (PC and Mac available)

My only concern was the build quality and the feel of one or two of the slider switches. Having said that, I don't expect to be abusing these too much, so it's probably adequate. This is the reason for the 4 star and not 5 star rating from me.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about PocketWizard MiniTT1 - Canon:

I pondered over my investment in the Pocket Wizard mini tt1 and flex tt5's and i have to say apart from the plastic shoe mounts i have not been disappointed at all. I gave 4 stars because of this, pocket wizards are more or less industry standard bits of kit and in my own opinion should have more durable metal ones, Gripe over ! CLS is great but this is better ! No more line of sight issues, strong sunlight no worries, distance as far as i will ever need. Couple one of these some flex tt5's and an ac3 controller together and you will have great control at your fingertips of flash power and lighting ratios. Easy and quick set up, sync speeds of 1/8000th very happy !!

Comments about PocketWizard MiniTT1 - Canon:

Units were easy to set up and use. Discovered they weren't on the latest firmware but easy to upgrade (used Mac).
Note that with a Metz 58AF-1 (Canon) both the flashgun and FlexTT5 needed to be on latest firmware to work properly, otherwise the exposures were completely off.
Used with Metz 58AF-1 (initial issues, then works fine), Canon 430EX and Canon 270EX (can't do camera flash menu items when off camera but TTL seems to work fine).
