The Sekonic L-308S Flashmate light meter offers an affordable, lightweight meter with the latest component technology and precise calibration for accurate digital exposures. The Sekonic L-308S features a choice of Full, 1/2 or 1/3 step selectable aperture settings and measures ambient or flash exposure either by incident or reflective metering modes. A built-in Lumisphere provides a quick switch from incident to reflected light measurements and a Lumidisc (included) offers precise contrast and brightness measurements. The LCD panel has also been improved for better readability. Information such as ISO, measuring modes and selected settings has been redesigned similar to the very popular Sekonic L-358 Flashmaster. More
Incident or reflected light measurement
Reflected light readings are captured at a receiving angle of about 40 degrees for subject readings made at the camera. Slide the L-308S's built-in Lumisphere over the silicon photo diode for incident light exposure readings of three-dimensional subjects. Snap on the included Lumidisc over the sensor for metering flat artwork or measuring contrast and/or exposure ratios within a scene.
Ambient / Flash measurement
Incident or reflected ambient light readings can be made with the L-308S over a wide range of lighting conditions at shutter speeds from 60 seconds to 1/8000th of a second and apertures from f/stops of f/1.4 to f/90.9. Flash at speeds from 1 to 1/500th of a second can be measured cordlessly or wired using a separate accessory PC cord. Flash and ambient readings are automatically calculated to display the proper exposure for the combination.
Exposures accurate down to a tenth-of-a-stop for both ambient and electronic flash light readings are available in full-stop mode. The L-308S can also display shutter speeds and apertures in half or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure settings on your camera with a repeat accuracy of +/- 0.1 EV. For cinema applications frame rates can be set from 8 to 128 frames per second. ISO sensitivity can be set from 3 to 8000 in third-stop increments.
Compact size and lightweight
The L-308S is the smallest digital flash meter for reflective and incident light readings in ambient or electronic flash lighting conditions. It is compact and light enough to fit into a shirt pocket, yet versatile enough to meet virtually every photographic demand. The L-308S is powered by a single AA battery and weighs only 3.4 ounces (95g). Its measurements are a compact 2.5"W x 4.3"H x 0.9"D (63mmW x 110mmH x 22mmD).

Being new to the world of light meters, I wasnít not too sure what to expect when I parted with my £120 and admittedly I was distinctly underwhelmed on opening the package to reveal a plastic thingamajig which could have been a stopwatch, a heart rate monitor or any other generic gadget you care to name. However light meters have very little to do with aesthetics and everything to do with ease of use, how much space they take up in an already overcrowded kit bag and most importantly of all accuracy of information and I have to say that on the last three criteria, the device scored admirably well. Letís start with functionality and ease of use: frankly I was surprised there was no Ronseal label attached as it did exactly what it was supposed to; by selecting the required ISO and shutter speed, a quick push of the button and bosh! the correct aperture appears. Space-wise pace; itís discreet and sits snugly in the crook of a hand with the push button ergonomically positioned at thumb level. It comes complete with a slim case which together with the meter tuck away neatly in a pocket or alternatively if you wanted to complete the geek look, around your neck with the supplied cord. Having now had a couple of weeks to get used to the Flashmate, I marvel at how much simpler day to day living would be if computers, cars, tvs were all made to the same standards as the i.e. affordable, simple to use and reliable. My only niggle, albeit a slight one, is that the plastickly build doesnít make it look like a serious product although in mitigation it certainly behaves like one. For the money, trust me, you wonít go far wrong.

Brilliant little light meter

About Me Photo Enthusiast
I'm new to manual flash photography, and after reading the reviews I decided this is something I couldn't live without. I wasn't wrong! Not only am I getting consistent results with my small kit of off camera flashes, it has also helped me to grow more confident with a film camera.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
It may be lightweight, but it is a heavyweight meter

The instructions that come with the meter are not really necessary. On the Wex Photographic site are two excellent videos that show you all you really need to know.I have used it regularly and it has never failed to give me an accurate reading, which enhances my photographic experience.
great product, great value.
By Simon Daniel Photography
Very easy to use, does the job. As this is the first light meter I've used I have nothing to compare it too but I have had no issues and it's made my photography processes much easier.
I'd definitely recommend this product - good kit
from Chelmsford Essex
I regularly need to set up studio lights for "product" & portrait photography. Set flash power, check histogram on camera, then correct each image in photoshop later. Time consuming & dull. This helps you to get the exposure right first time and then every time - job done!

Extremely lightweight, and essential item for your kit bag. Easy to use, even if it's your first time in the studio or on location. Many functions, and a great neck strap which means you're not likely to sit or stand on the blub! Always a worry of mine.

Excellent Exposure Meter
from Mid Wales
I bought this unit to replace a Minolta Autometer 3 which had always been a problematic device, unreliable and its battery cost was absurd. I use the Sekonic as an incident light meter for clothing photography shot under daylight colour temperature softboxes. I've found it reliable for this, it's lightweight and it only requires a single AA battery to power it, in sharp contrast to the 6 volt (I think it was) battery for the Minolta. It has proved to be very reliable so far. It has a very reasonable price tag too.
Easy to use, good value
