Having used the standard kit lens a Canon 17-85mm zoon with my Canon 40D I was becoming frustrated with the effective wide angle end of the lens and looked for a wide angle lens to give me foreground impact. I went for this lens with its constant apperture range as opposed to the variable aperture lens from both Sigma & Canon. On first use I was knocked out with the ability to make the foreground objects really dominate the scenes and the fantastic depth of field this lens gives me in landscape work. I also do a lot of theatre photography for an amateur theatre company and this lens enables me to shoot a full record shot of the set without moving from my normal seat in the stalls, previously I had to move further back to obtain this shot. Having shot comparable landscape shots at similar settings with my kit lens and this one I would say that this lens is slightly higher contrast than my Canon Lens.
This lens has given my photographs a shot in the arm and renewed my interest in landscape work and enabled me to choose different viewpoints with much more impact. A product well worth the money.

HSM Focusing is quiet and blistering fast.
Manual focus is easy to use. User can be confident of a sharp image.
Composition and distortion is easily achieved in camera position to subject. Not a difficult feat.
I have 3 other SIGMA lenses and they perform well

I like wide lenses so this has become my everyday lens. It works well in combination with my Sigma 30 mm 1.4L. My opinion is that if you can afford L lenses, buy them, but if not go for Sigma. At the time of writing the Canon EF-S 10-20 is 50% more expensive and slower.

Ignoring the silly "glitter" finish that Sigma sprinkle over their matt black. But on the inside; this is magic; upto the standard of a prime lens.

I have had a two year old example of the cheaper smaller aperture Sigma 10-20, which was always hobbled by the elements being slightly out of alignment. I have also had a Tokina 12-24.

But the extra money here does show through in the image quality; it is very sharp, bags of contrast, the elements all appear to be in a straight line, and the colours, whilst still a little "Sigma" creamy, are much closer to accurate. It really does produce pictures up to the standard of a prime lens.

It pin-cushions around the corners more than the smaller f number Sigma 10-20 sibling used to, but it's a "natural" distortion, unlike the Tokina which can be very disorientating round the edges.

I have only used it a few hours; but from the first look through the viewfinder the extra money shows; it's a pity Sigma need almost twice the price to glue all the glass the right way round; but they have done a good job here; I suspect this is better than the Canon.
