The Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 HSM is a large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras. The lens is ideally suited for a wide variety of subjects and is designed specifically for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensors. The super wide-angle capability of this zoom lens (equivalent range of approx. 27-112mm when used with a Pentax digital SLR camera) makes it ideal as an everyday large-aperture lens. In addition, the maximum magnification of 1:2.3 also enables close-up photography. DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.

The Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 is the perfect upgrade for anyone wishing to better their images instantly, at the wide end the extra 1mm is noticeable and at f2.8 produces usable images, stop it down to f8 and you will be rewarded with some truly great images. The lens also doubles up perfectly as a sharp portrait lens and at around the 50-70mm mark and stopped down to f5.6 the lens is sharp as a tack. I cover all aspects of photography and the nice bonus with this lens is that you get a half decent Macro lens, it's not as good as a dedicated 1:1 macro but still produces images of excellent quality. The real appeal of this lens has to be the price, you are getting a solid piece of glass HSM silent motor, great optics, superb build quality at a shade under 300 quid, I did a direct comparison against a Pentax 16-45mm f4.0 and the Sigma beat it hands down. I would highly recommend this lens for enthusiasts looking to get better results whilst not wanting to part with the best part of a grand for a similar Pentax model. I really can't recommend this lens enough, very happy with my purchase.

The resolution and sharp images across most of the zoom range are impressive, colour rendition is neutral and the F-2.8 at closer range gives a brighter view finder.

Any body wishing to up grade the standard 'kit' lense along with an extended zoom range should seriously consider this lense. The only down side is its weight, but I can live with that. At least it shows there are no 'plastic' elements which are so common on the cheap kit lenses.
It would have got 5 stars if it was lighter.
One of the little gems on the market at a price that is a bargain.

Not the macro I was hoping for, but with patience produces some nice images. Not easy to fit to my Pentax K200D and very heavy so not suitable for handheld use when taking macro shots.
