The Sigma 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens is an upgrade to Sigma's popular 50-500mm ultra-telephoto zoom, and now includes an Optical Stabilizer which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible - a particularly useful addition on a lens of this size. The Sigma 50-500mm OS lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), to ensure quick and quiet auto-focus, as well as full-time manual focus capability. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction of colour aberration, while the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghost and ensures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The addition of the optional 1.4x EX DG or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters produce a 70-700mm F6.3-8 or a 100-1000mm F9-12.6 MF zoom lens respectively. The filter size of this lens is 95mm, but the lens is supplied with a step down ring enabling digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor to use an 86mm filter.

This is my only non Nikon lens and all my others are pro grade. Before buying I tested the previous non-OS lens and the 150-500mm model. I was cautious as the this model is not badged "EX" however it does carry a 3 year Sigma warranty. I took a few images, in not the best light, both with OS on at low shutter speeds and OS off at high speeds. I was impressed and bought this, the OS version. Sigma claim about 4 stops lower possible with OS on, I think in all honesty that's a little hopeful. However 3 stops consistantly possible. On my first outing with the lens I captured the attached image of the fighting redshanks hand held at 500mm, then the geese landing and now all can see why this is such a capable lens.

One small negative and the reason why I dropped it a star, I do wish that Sigma would improve their lens body coatings. The current methods leave the lens open to being easily scratched and I such I use a Lenscoat to protect it.

This is a really good lens and put my Nikon 80-400 VR into a well known auction site to help pay for it!

This lens feels nice when you hold it I find it not that heavy as people say it is I do a lot of walking as well and it rests nicely in my arm I also find it very easy to operate with a neutral feel the image quality far as I am concerned is extremely good and the auto focusing its faster than my other lens overall I am extremely glad I took the plunge and brought one.

Used for wildlife and airshows, to coin a phrase - awesome. Quality is far better than a 10x zoom lens has any right to be and the OS enables very good handheld shots at 500mm at 300th of a second or even slower.
