Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens - Nikon Fit Further Details

  • View Video

The Nikon D40 and D40x were the first Nikon cameras without a built in auto focus motor. This has now been followed with the D60 camera. This means that any lens used with the D40 D40x and D60 will need an auto focus motor built into the lens. Many Sigma lenses have been re-designed to incorporate a built in motor, allowing autofocus when used with all Nikon cameras, including the D40 D40x and D60.

This lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D40, D40x and D60 camera which require a built-in motor.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens - Nikon Fit:

    Consistent output; consistently bad!
Do not buy this lens if you intend to use if for sports photography. Focus is really slow, noisy and this lens will not produce a sharp picture if used to photograph fast moving objects.
If you really need a 70-300 lens, save a few pounds and get the Nikon 70-300VR.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens - Nikon Fit:

After ummm'ing and arrr'ing for some time between this and the, much more expensive, Nikon VR version, I decided on the Sigma.
I've been pretty much blown away everytime I have used the lens as it never fails to amaze me how sharp it is for the price.
I recently took it to Florida and took some shots on an airboat ride. Scooting across choppy waters at 45mph and bouncing up and down as we went simply wasn't a problem for this lens, and I bagged some pin sharp shots of blue herons in mid flight as they flew quickly in front of us.
It's also really useful as a long portrait lens, throwing the background into a complete blur, lovely.
The 'macro' tag is a little cheeky as it's ratio is only 1:2, but it is genuinely useful and I have have used it with great effect several times.
Focusing is fast and accurate and, although there is a lack of an internal motor, is relatively quiet.
On top of all that it fits easily into a camera bag due to it's relatively small dimentions.
All in all, a great lens for the price.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a beginner so I will keep my review to what I know and that is, compared to the Nikon 55-200mm (non-VR) I had tried previously this lens is SHARP.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens - Nikon Fit:

I bought this lens for my wifes D40x last year as I was sick of her borrowing my lenses when I needed them. I thought that at this price it doesn't really matter if it's not a great lens and she wouldn't know the difference anyway. I have to say that I was blown away by it's performance. The Nikon fit comes with an internal focusing motor (not HSM) that is quick and responsive, the pictures taken with this are pin sharp, well saturated and and distortion is controlled fairly well over the entire range. The build quality is far better than what you would expect at this price too. Over the last couple of years, Sigma have really pulled their fingers out and now are producing great lenses through their entire range, lenses that are close rivals (but not quite achieving) to the camera manufacturers brand of lenses but at an absolute fraction of the price. The very slight difference in quality (and it is only very slight) is easily made for with the price tag. This lens in particular, whilst not an EX lens, certainly performs like one. I would rate this alongside most mid range lenses and all at a price that you couldn't even buy a battery grip for! A worthy addition to any enthusiasts gadget bag. If you need a wide aperture then this won't fill your requirements but if you are not bothered about having f2.8, then this lens is a cheap way to get a long reach with brilliant results.

            Highly recommended.
