The Sigma 70-300 is a telephoto zoom lenses with tele-macro function, optimised for digital SLR cameras. The performance telephoto zoom lens is capable of shooting with a maximum magnification of 1:2 at the focal length of 300 mm. It’s the ideal lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.
Sigma’s DG lenses are designed for cameras with a full-frame sensor, but cameras with a cropped sensor can also take these lenses. These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.
In order to attain the highest quality images, the APO lens has been made using special low-dispersion (SLD) glass and is designed to minimise colour aberration.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens - Pe:
Got this to replace a tired and worn 55-200 kit lens. Wasn't expecting much from this. I was very surprised at the quality of image, sharp and fast to focus in good light.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Very flexible and useful lens
About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bought this lens to replace my old Sigma 70-300 APO macro (pentax fit) which had initially been used with 35mm film and then ist ds, K20 and finally my current K5. I used this lens when walking the dog in the countryside as I was able to catch whatever I came across: mostly butterflies and insects (Macro) and birds (tele). This lens stopped working and rather than investigate repairing, at the price, decided to to buy the latest version. It is better in that it seems to be lighter, quicker and sharper, although I have to say these lenses are not the sharpest. Pentax are great in that I still have my old Pentax ME and the lenses still fit. Sigma make excellent pentax fit lenses.

Long range heavy hitter

About Me Getting started
This is a big heavy lens and it makes my Pentax K5 distinctly nose heavy. Tripod users note that a support is not included, so make sure tripod head locks up firmly enough to stop droop.Picture quality is good but not spectacular, however this lens provides good value for money. The macro feature works well although it is fiddly to engage and disengage. Lens must be zoomed to 200mm plus and focus distance must be less than 1.5 metres to engage; then focus distance must be more than 1.5 metres before you can disengage.Lens is supplied with a soft case (nice but a little bit of a loose fit) and a full lens hood (feels a bit cheap and plasticky). Instruction manual supplied isn't too clear but explains everything.AF is little loud but no worse than any of the other lowerer cost optics.Overall: A keenly priced amateur birders delight with a useful side line in floral magnification. Just don't walk with the thing hanging around your neck for too long.

Well Worth Buying
Bought this lens to replace my earlier, manual focus one. Always thought that Sigma APos were good but this one was a vast improvement on their earlier attempt. It is sharp, contrasty and gives you a superb range to play with from near macro to long telephoto. If shooting sports, it's better to up your ISO to 200 which then gives you a 70-300 2-2.8!!!All this for a budget price.Have been looking through my results at 100% enlargement and with the odd exception, they are amazing. The only downside I have found is that, at the long end, you can find split prism screens may darken. But this is due to eye placement so if you move your eye position on the viewfinder a little it should clear, although this is not such a big issue in autofocus mode. Also it can seem a bit fiddly as you have to flip a slider to go into "macro", but that said, I found no noticeable tromboning when pointing the lens down, something that always happened on my older manual version. In all, an excellent lens at an excellent price!
