The Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM lens is a large aperture medium telephoto lens and features the natural perspective that an 85mm focal length provides. The f1.4 aperture makes this length perfect for portraits and low-light photography - the one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and the one glass mold element gives excellent correction for all types of aberrations. On an APS-C size image sensor, the Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM lens is effectively a 127.5mm f1.4 lens. This lens also features a rear focus system that ensures little fluctuation in aberration when focussing the lens. A Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghost even in backlit photography and the HSM ensures quiet, fast auto-focus and full-time manual focus capability. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 85cm and a maximum magnification of 1:8.6.

Great lens, I use it at weddings and for portraits, very fast and sharp focus.

An amazing lens
All of my other lenses are Nikon, so I bought this Sigma lens with some trepidation. Well, I needn't have worried because portraits taken with this lens look beautiful. The image sharpness, even wide open at f/1.4 is incredible and the gentle softness of the out-of-focus background areas is luscious. Colour and contrast are top notch as well. The lens focuses accurately and is well built. My only very minor comment would be the auto/manual focus switch looks a bit fragile.I cannot recommend this lens enough, and although it is expensive it has to be good value compared to the Nikon equivalent.

As good as the Nikon at half the price!

What can I say, the old S(t)igma attached to this manufacturer has been blown away. I'm a Nikon nut, used both their current f1.4 85mm options, one is blown into the weeds, the other is pushed hard in every respect by the Sigma. I may even venture that the Sigma has just got it's nose in front with the AF. Bokeh is superb with very slight fall off at f1.4, once you come down to f3.5 or so, fall off has almost totally disappeared. Autofocus is rapid and accurate, I have yet to have this lens hunt for an AF point. My only minor niggle is regarding the hood (2 supplied for C size and DX sensors), you can attach the lens cap to the hood, no problem, however, if the cap is attached to the lens, you have to take the hood off to remove the lens cap. A (very) minor niggle with a superb piece of kit.If Nikon are reading this, be afraid!
