March 2012 - Astronomy is one of the oldest of the Natural Sciences, if not the oldest, and one which can be taken up by practically anyone with very little knowledge or equipment from the outset. It’s a science, in which amateur astronomers can provide results of genuine interest and further the understandings of astronomy at large, and like all hobbies and past-times, it has a start place, and everyone has to start somewhere.

The Sky-Watcher Heritage-76 has been specially designed to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) and the 400th Anniversary of Galileo’s first telescope. This is not only a highly functional precision optical instrument but also a beautiful collector’s piece, desk or shelf ornament, and ideal gift.
The beautiful, luxurious tube graphics depict a richly historical theme. The images have been specially designed to symbolise Galileo and his conflict with the Catholic church. Galileo Galilei’s public championing of Copernicus’ theory of heliocentrism, which was contrary to the geocentric beliefs at the time, eventually led to him being denounced to the Roman Inquisition. He was subsequently tried, suspected of heresy, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Of course Galileo, “The father of modern science” and “The father of modern observational astronomy” was proved right in the end.
The telescope tube is also adorned with the words “Galileo 400” and “International Year of Astronomy” as well as key dates in the lifetime of Galileo.

Great starter scope
Comments about Sky-Watcher Heritage-76 Mini Dobsonian Telescope:
This was bought as a Christmas present for a 6 year old after reading reviews elsewhere. Now I will say that he was expecting to be able to see the martians on Mars, so expectations were high... Well it's not quite that good, but so far we've seen a whole lot of lunar craters in better detail than I expected at this price point. Just looking at stars in the night sky is a revelation as you can see many, many more not visible to the naked eye. With a good free app like Planets showing you where to point, you can see the major constelations clearly. This is especially helped by the 25mm wide angle lens that ships as well as the 10mm higher magnification.Looking at the moon for extended periods can be tiring on the eyes, so I'd recommend you make use of the discounts and buy a lunar filter with the scope. We've also bought a budget 2x Barlow lens which with a little bit of effort does give some significantly better detail. The base makes it incredibly easy to align and it's turdy enough that you won't have to worry about younger astronomers being hands on.Our next step is to get involved with a local club so we can see what other people are using and plan our next upgrade!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good little starter scope
About Me Photo Enthusiast
This appears to be an excellent starter scope - I've not had a chance to test it properly yet, as it's been too cloudy! :( But hopefully when it clears I'll get excellent views of the moon - I've given 4 stars for now as it all seems very high quality for the price and will try to update this once I've managed to get proper use from it.There are a couple of things I would mention - The scope can only be used for looking at the stars and night sky as everything is upside down - Also, aligning the spotter scope was a little tricky but nothing too difficult
