A very high quality G Series telephoto zoom lens with wide focal length range. Smooth, silent AF operation using high-torque SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor). G Series optics with Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for clear, sharp edge-to-edge description and reduced chromatic aberration. Circular aperture for beautiful defocus effects. Convenient operation with focus hold button and focus range limiter. More
Versatile, easy-to-handle telephoto zoom
Compact and lightweight, the SAL70300G combines extended zoom range with G Lens image quality. A 1.2m minimum focus distance makes it a good close-up performer too.
See the difference with G Lens
Renowned for their descriptive power, G Series lenses maintain excellent peripheral light characteristics and maximum contrast even at the edges of the frame.
Instead of a standard polygon-shaped lens aperture, this lens features a 9-blade circular aperture for more natural, rounded defocusing or 'bokeh'.
Refined optical performance
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements provide superior contrast, resolution and colour fidelity throughout the image, even at large aperture settings.
Focus quickly and quietly
A rear focusing mechanism enables reduced minimum focusing distances and fast autofocus response. A built-in SSM (Super Sonicwave Motor) ensures silent operation.

Best for the A65
About Me Semi-Professional
Comments about Sony 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G SSM Lens:
I bought mine second hand six months ago and have used more than any of the other lenses I have for the A65. It is light enough to be an 'all day lens' snaps focus in good light almost instantly and gives a sharp, chromatic distortion free image over its whole range. My best wildlife and particularly semi macro ( technically micro) images I have are taken with this lens ( aided by the camera sensor stabilisation system). Colour is deeply saturated in good light and good in flat lighting. It is one of the few lens that I have access too that can image a sunset without flare. I have noticed that a UV filter reduces contrast and colour quality noticably so I now take it off just before shooting. The hood marks easily and the rubber zoom ring picks up dirt too easily. It is so much better than lesser zooms from Sony and others that it is well worth the cost new let alone second hand if you get one that has been looked after. The 24 meg sensor on the A65 crops well to 500mm equivalent up to 800asa giving an almost macro size with quality as well as for widlife in general. This may be a bit of a glowing assessment but it is worth it. Recommended

Best in it's price range!
from Staines, Surrey
This lens performs incredibly well. The whole range is pretty sharp, maybe a slight drop at the longest end, but I'm more than happy with the real world results.I've been using this lens extensively. It's pretty impressive wide open, without having to worry about any unusable soft shots. It also deals with chromatic aberration, flare, ghosting really well.

Quality optics, good value
from London, UK
This a high quality, light and compact lens with SSM focusing (i,e a near silent built-in motor) that works on full-frame Alpha mount camera like the Sony A900 as well as cropped format sensors. Stopped down a little, and between 70mm and 200mm this lens is very sharp. Close to 300mm it looses a little sharpness but is still very good. What I like the most about this lens, aside from its very good optical performance, is its light weight. However the trade-off is the plastic body which can mark quite easily if not treated carefully. An essential purchase for Alpha mount users wanting a versatile, powerful, high quality telephoto zoom for travel, nature and landscape work
