I bought mine for going on my 15th Safari, I have used Minolta/Sony for all but one Safari. This model was a let-down and only exceeds the Alpha 700 by having 24 megapixels. To show how gimmicky this camera is, to set either average, centre-weighted or spot you have to go on to one of the on-screen menus, in other words setting the metering mode is not a primary function on this camera.
When one of the biggest tuskers I have ever seen broke through the undergrowth, the camera was on auto drive, but froze whilst it sorted out digital noise issues-picture lost. (I was using a Sony G lens) It seems to me that Sony went out with a shopping list and sacrificed things like construction quality, simplicity of use and made it over complicated.
Finally the screen is easily scratched.
My opinion is that this is a sideways move form my old Alpha 700 and not a patch on my beloved Minolta Dynax 9

I must confess that, although I habitually buy my photo gear from Wex, I didn't actually buy my A77 from Wex; I bought it over the counter in a futile attempt to help keep my local branch of ******* open (and paid a fair bit more for my altruism). Nonetheless, I'd strongly recommend this camera to y'all; I'm very pleased with mine indeed. If you're hesitating because of the EVF, give it a go- obviously it's not the same as a Fresnel screen, but I find it gives me loads of really useful info about exactly how my photo will be exposed. It's well-built, ergonomically well thought-out, quite quiet in use thanks to the SLT mirror, very much an extension of one's hands and eyes. The only real gripe is that it drains battery power like the Greek Treasury swallows German Euros, and a charged spare battery is essential to have in your bag...Sony, if you're listening, PLEEEEEASE give us the ability to switch the LCD monitor off as part of the next firmware upgrade!!

I use this camera for a wide range of images and most of the time I am very pleased indeed with the performance. I don't use the 12fps very often, as this means shooting with the lens at maximum aperture, I prefer using the 8fps with full control over the aperture.
I find the articulated screen fantastic for those very low angle shots and for macro work
Much as I love this camera, in my opinion, it has an annoying fault, the video button, it's often accidentally hit.When this happens you have to wait whilst the camera writes the video and you either have to take another image to return to reviewing the still images or go into the menu to change it back.
So warts and all what do I think of the camera - great - but please Mr Sony on the next firmware update enable us to turn off that video button when required

After using the Alpha 700 for the last 3 years, I didn't want to upgrade to just anything, so the A77 has been a camera I have been waiting for.
It is amazing! From pure ease of use of the auto settings right down to the manual settings, allowing you to be as creative you you desire!
I use it for photographing gigs, to landscapes, portraits, products and of course now for filming!
The filming side to this is just fantastic - with Sony being the lead in their game, means that the camera is equipped with super steady shot, amazing control over the video, and crisp clear footage, that is just perfect for video presentations for work.
If there is one gripe, it is that it does not come with an option of a bundled mic, but hey, that is only me, after all it is a DSLT and it's main purpose is to take amazing pictures, which is does brilliantly!
After Sony's acquisition of Konica Minolta, they have taken the DSLR world by storm, making Nikon and Canon both step up their game, because Sony is embracing this technology, and giving it a huge kick up the rear to make sure they are seen (and are seen) as a DSLR(T) brand that are most certainly here to stay! :-)

I'm a fan of the SLT Technology, having live view in the view finder with the histogram displayed is very handy for tweaking the exposure settings in difficult light conditions.

In the past week I've used the A77 for a wedding shoot, sports action shots and nighttime landscapes and I'm really pleased with the results.

Battery life good, I managed over 400 shots using combined Jpeg and Raw.

The only negative point is; when shooting using the motor drive, the view finder blacks out when you take your finger off the shutter button, while the images are processed, this can take 10 or so seconds and means no more images can be recorded during this time. That said the 12 fps motor drive is awesome.

This has got to be the best semi-professional SLDT. Comparing it with some of the "bigger name" DSLRs I've seen, the controls are positioned much more conveniently. Most controls can be accessed without going through menus - saving time when it counts. The digital viewfinder and rear display panel are configureable individually and crystal clear. All round, a pleasure to use.

Very impressed with this camera after the Nikon D300 I had it is stunningly better IQ is far better, build on par too & ergonomics better. Noise above iso 3200 is not as good (but I hardly ever use that feature) but below iso 3200 it knocks spots off the Nikon (& a few others)
The 'kit' lens 16-50ssm is pro quality glass not your average poor kit lens (it was originally designated to be a Sony 'G' series & the first pre release models had this in the exif data....a wonderful lens/ camera combo.
As for the EVF it won't be to everyones taste but those who like it will love it (me included) it is much more versatile than an optical finder it's a case of don't knock it 'till you have tried it.
I use it for landscapes & portraits & it excels at both.
Didn't think I would leave Nikon after many years.....glad I did though.

We've had 2 of these for 5 weeks and have taken over 6,000 excellent photos including 3 weddings and 2 engagement sessions.

We have had zero problems with either camera and have been pleasantly surprised at how well the camera handles difficult lighting situations.

The camera is so fast that the finished photo is already showing on the LCD before the subject finishes saying "cheese"!

We also have one of he awesome new SONY 16-50MM 2.8 lenses. The camera and lens go together like peanut butter and jelly. Having a silent lens really pays off when taking the HD videos.

The only thing I would change on he camera is make it able to start and stop video with the shutter release button.

first used today.
have an A700 & Dynax 7D so am used to the product. A77 compares well. Don't trust the packed Disc. it took 2 hours to un-crash my computer. New Raw files unsuported by photoshop (as yet?)can't download the movies otherwise great.
