The Sony 50mm f1.8 SAM is a light, bright portrait lens offering superb optical performance at a price that’s irresistible to first-time DSLR users. With a wide F1.8 aperture, it’s ideal for capturing crisp, beautiful portraits in natural light with smoothly defocused backgrounds. AF performance is quiet and precise thanks to the inbuilt Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM).
Make the move from the standard zoom and explore the world of portrait photography with the Sony 50mm f1.8 SAM lens for your Alpha DSLR camera. It boasts a large aperture which makes it easy to get great-looking portrait shots. The Sony 50mm f1.8 SAM is one of the first fixed focal length lenses in the DT series, which is designed exclusively for a DSLRs that use an APS-C type sensor. Please note: DT lenses are not recommended for use with the DSLR-A900.
SteadyShot INSIDE™ In-Camera Image Stabilization
A major reason for its compact, lightweight lens design is the benefit of SteadyShot INSIDE™ in-camera image stabilization, built into every Alpha DSLR camera -- and enabling lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms.
DT Lens Design
A more compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in some Sony Alpha DSLR cameras.
Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)
The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto focus (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens. Instead, AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the focusing lens group directly, helping to assure smooth AF response.
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass
To reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colours.
Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

What a snip!

I am truly amazed at the quality of this lens. Way beyond what I expected at just over a hundred quid! Used with my very recently acquired A77 the results are truly brilliant. Autofocus is accurate and fast, Close-ups and portraits are mouthwateringly good. To be honest after a diet of zooms for many years I had forgotten how much fun you can have with a prime. Buy one, you'll never regret it!
This is the first lens I have bought since getting my alpha 55 a few months ago, and I love it. Great for portraits, making your subject really stand out against a lovely soft background and a fabulous price. What's not to like?

Excellent affordable lens
I was surprised by the low cost of this lens given its feature list. It turns out to be excellent value for money - it performs brilliantly and has been a joy to use.

I bought this lens after various magazine reviews ,and the fact that it was under £150 , i've used it for landscape ,portrait and wildlife(insects, butterflys etc). i would buy this lens again if it failed on me .somehow i don't think it will, even though it feels a bit plasticy.with a nice big aperture of f1.8 you can get some nice bokeh effects,if thats not your thing, its so small on the end of the camera its a nice unobtrusive street photography lens.well recommended

Great value prime lens
I purchased this after reading a very positive review in What Digital Camera and I've been absolutely delighted with it. Photos are sharp, colours are spot-on and it's fast enough to shoot without flash even in low light. A must-have for Sony Alpha users in my opinion and at this price an absolute steal!
