The Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens is a 15x zoom lens that features Tamron's unique Piezo Drive ultrasonic motor for silent, precise and extraordinarily fast autofocus. The 15x zoom offers focal lengths from 18mm at the wide-angle end up to a telephoto 270mm (29-432mm in 35mm equivalent) making it an ideal, all purpose lens. Despite its impressive performance, the Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens is both lightweight and compact, making it a great choice for travel photography. In addition to the Piezo Drive ultrasonic motor this Tamron lens features a Vibration Control mechanism to help keep images steady and blur free, even at maximum zoom. More
July 2011 - "So is it the perfect travel lens? It certain crams in all you’d normally need – with some icing on top as it has more than excellent reach – 300mm equivalent used to be ‘long’ so the 405mm the Tamron offers is a very useful bonus. Find out more about the Tamron 18-270mm Lens here...
PZD (PIEZO Drive)
Ultrasonic motors are divided into two categories depending on how the energy that moves the drive is generated: travelling wave motors and standing wave motors. The 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II PZD employs a newer technology, the PZD (PIEZO Drive), which functions according to the standing wave principle.
A standing wave ultrasonic motor utilizes high-frequency voltage to extend and turn the piezoelectric (piezoceramic) element, thus moving the entire element in a standing wave movement. The metal tip is the contact point of the element to the rotor, and moves in an elliptic motion from the swivelling motion of the moving element. The friction from this motion subsequently turns the rotor. Standing wave ultrasonic motors have the distinct advantage of being faster, quieter and more precise and compact than their travelling wave counterparts.
VC (Vibration Compensation)
Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens element is simply held in place by contact with the steel balls, resulting in smooth movement with little friction. This delivers a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance and eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots.
New VC mechanism (moving coil method)
Tamron’s original VC image stabilization mechanism utilizes a moving magnet system with heavy magnets. In the new VC unit the positions of
the magnets and the coils are reversed, consequently the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with lightweight coils, which reduces the load on the drive system. The lighter, more compact newly improved VC unit contributes to the lens’s overall lightweight and compact size.
Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers (also known as APS-C sensors). These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm.

I had been looking for a more versatile lens and as we all do these days, used the Internet views and YouTube videos to get some idea on what I was buying. I had for months been comparing canon 18-200 sigma 18-250 and the tamron 18-270 and had my hands on them at the focus show. Having the tamron in my hands made my mind up. It's small and light and works brilliantly. At 18mm you get a curving to the picture which is the only down side, but the images I have taken with it are all really clear. I recently went to the tramway museum and normally would take my bag with 18-55, 28-105 & 75-300 mm lenses inside, this time I took just one. It's the first none canon lens I've bought and its no let down. Very well made and recommended.

not bad for a travel lens
Not a bad lens for travel use, you'll never get excellent results form such a lens however it does give above average quality snaps which is great when you need to travel light.
Tamron 18-270 Di II VC
I bought this lens as a one stop for holidays, and was not disappointed. For the zoom range, cost and lightness it does offer value for money. The VC and piezo focus works well. If you want an appreciably higher quality at this range you will need to pay 2 to 3 times as much, with twice the weight. The things that are a slight annoyance. focus ring is too close to the zoom ring, and there is insufficient friction on the zoom, hence unless you have the lens locked at 18mm it extends rather quickly under gravity. It is slightly soft at 270mm, but what can you expect for a extended zoom at the cost

Travel photography is great but the increasing weight and size restrictions on luggage make this an ideal option for non professional use.

Good all rounder
With only 5kg hand luggage allowance, I was glad to have this lens for travelling. Wide angle and telephoto facilities make it very flexible (buildings, landscapes and to a lesser extent wildlife). Its light weight and vc means it is easy to get a good image at maximum focal length.
Great Travel Lens
Excellent all day use lens, 18 mm focal length for landscapes and 270 mm focal length for wildlife and action.Great addition to the kit bag for general travel and wandering around while using an over the shoulder small camera bag.
