The Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens is a 15x zoom lens that features Tamron's unique Piezo Drive ultrasonic motor for silent, precise and extraordinarily fast autofocus. The 15x zoom offers focal lengths from 18mm at the wide-angle end up to a telephoto 270mm (29-432mm in 35mm equivalent) making it an ideal, all purpose lens. Despite its impressive performance, the Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens is both lightweight and compact, making it a great choice for travel photography. In addition to the Piezo Drive ultrasonic motor this Tamron lens features a Vibration Control mechanism to help keep images steady and blur free, even at maximum zoom.  More

The lens most travelled: Tamron 18-270mm Review

July 2011 - "So is it the perfect travel lens? It certain crams in all you’d normally need – with some icing on top as it has more than excellent reach – 300mm equivalent used to be ‘long’ so the 405mm the Tamron offers is a very useful bonus. Find out more about the Tamron 18-270mm Lens here...

Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD technical details

PZD (PIEZO Drive)
Ultrasonic motors are divided into two categories depending on how the energy that moves the drive is generated: travelling wave motors and standing wave motors. The 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II PZD employs a newer technology, the PZD (PIEZO Drive), which functions according to the standing wave principle.
A standing wave ultrasonic motor utilizes high-frequency voltage to extend and turn the piezoelectric (piezoceramic) element, thus moving the entire element in a standing wave movement. The metal tip is the contact point of the element to the rotor, and moves in an elliptic motion from the swivelling motion of the moving element. The friction from this motion subsequently turns the rotor. Standing wave ultrasonic motors have the distinct advantage of being faster, quieter and more precise and compact than their travelling wave counterparts.

VC (Vibration Compensation)
Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens element is simply held in place by contact with the steel balls, resulting in smooth movement with little friction. This delivers a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance and eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots.

New VC mechanism (moving coil method)
Tamron’s original VC image stabilization mechanism utilizes a moving magnet system with heavy magnets. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnets and the coils are reversed, consequently the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with lightweight coils, which reduces the load on the drive system. The lighter, more compact newly improved VC unit contributes to the lens’s overall lightweight and compact size.

Di-II
Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers (also known as APS-C sensors). These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm.

Great for use on holidays (but do you really need that much zoom), or grabbing if you're going to the park with your kids.

Not so great for more serious photography, e.g. Portraits of your family.

About one in a hundred of my shots were massively overexposed, plus many others with modest (manageable) overexposure - I've never had these problems using Nikon lenses on the same camera.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Was lucky enough to borrow this lens for a month. I own a Nikon D3100 with the VR 18-55 and 55-200 Nikon lenses.
With this lens though I did not need both lenses any more AND I could zoom further!
I used it on a holiday to Dubai, taking pictures of the worlds tallest building, sand sea etc. and a NYE party. This lens was lightweight and compact and was VR compatible. Was very useful in that was able to change from photographing the water fountain display to a close up of friends without changing lens.
I've also used it for photographing a field hockey match - again useful for zooming in to goal mouth and close up sideline.

I now want to buy one myself!

I purchased this lens after reading reviews and looking at sample images taken with this lens.

I am a full time pro photographer who uses either fixed focal lenses or 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8

When going on holiday I didn't and couldnt taken a selection of my pro nikon lenses with me. Just not practical with luggage and three kids.

I finally took the plunge and bought this cheap lens and I have to say it performs amazingly.

Images are sharp with great colour, I even tried it in the studio for a few portraits.

Amazing optic for little money. Great all rounder.

Idea for close and far subjects. Lightweight, so easy to carry. If you only buy one zoom lens, make it this one.

        A really great buy.

        By Flocky.

I have used the lense on my Nikon D5100 to take 'close ups' of wild life and flora, and panoramas, with cracking results.

        Best Uses

I have used this lens on two trips so far, and it has certainly made life simpler. It has saved me time in taking shots and has proved, to me anyway, that the quality of the shots are not really any differant to those using the nikkor lenses I have used for years. I am very pleased and would recommend to anyone.
