About Me Professional
Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminium Tripod:
I'm sorry for the guy who received a 'rogue' version. It happens in all manufactured goods - a perfect product marred by one bad one - cars, cameras, lenses, you name it. But please don't judge this great tripod on that lone review. He was very unlucky, and that's a let down, as it is a terrific tripod. It's only fault (I had to find one) is that it's a little heavier than any previous models I own. However, that is offset by its great stability - especially useful for landscape photography. I would highly recommend this to amateur and pro (whatever that realy means!) photographers alike.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

About Me Getting started, Hobbyist/Enthusiast
I've had it for nearly 2 years now. Its served me well.Got 2 issues with it though-1) using the supplied key to tighten the release plate is annoying...Hard to do it in 1 go.2) over time (after only 4 or 5 uses of the spikes), the rubber feet spike works no more.So no access to the spikes when needed. But overall a very well constructed.

Alta Pro 263 AT Tripod looks and feels like a quality product.Leg adjustment to pre-set angles with lock release button is a very good feature and enables confident set up.Centre column tilt system is well engineered and effective. However there are two minor points of observation.Centre Column RotationWhen the rotational lock knob is tightened it causes a very small but perceptible lean forward of the column in the direction the knob is being turned and an angular clockwise rotation (viewed from above)of the centre column. The movements were measured simply but repeatedly by using a 300mm ruler clamped in the quick shoe which recorded, at the end of ruler against a fixed point, a 1.5mm downward vertical deflection and a 1 degree CW rotational deflection.Centre Column HeightWhen the height lock knob is tightened the bottom of the column moves very slightly to the left towards the lock knob which gives the effect of a tilt of the quick shoe to the right and a very slight angular clockwise rotation of the column. The rotation was measured at 1 degree but the tilt was difficult to measure. In practice these movements do not cause a problem provided you fine tune your camera position at the ball head after setting the height and rotation of the column. I have no experience of this type of tripod and it may be that the limits of manufacturing clearance tolerance on the column means that tiny deflections will always be present. These deflections do not detract from my positive opinion of the tripod which I enjoy using.

I use with the manfrotto 410 for landscapes, what a great combo.

I was really excited about this tripod having seen the reviews and videos on the web. I had mine delivered, got it out of the box and put the centre column at 90 degrees and now it is stuck there. I am really gutted I was really looking forward to getting out and about with it. The orange switch on the centre column just will not move. I am not looking forward to the prospect and sending it back and getting a refund. I was wary of getting a cheaper alternative to a Monfrotto. This has now put me off buying the Vanguard.[[ASIN:B0046GHEVC VANGUARD Alta Pro 263AGH Aluminium Tripod with GH-100 Pistol Grip Ball Head]]

Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminium Tripod
I would have liked to have deducted just a quarter of a star if I could for the rather clumsy way the quick-shoe is connected to the camera. This necessitates the use of the provided key. Other manufacturers have a sprung key that folds flat under the shoe. It's churlish of me to complain about this small detail but it's magnified by the excellence of the design, engineering and construction of the rest of this tripod.

A tripod designed by/for photographers

If you are a photographer frustrated by trying to find stability in awkward situations, or need extra stability in windy conditions or would like a piece of equipment to match your six-foot frame, then this is one for you to consider. First the height; it extends to eye level viewing for a 6 feet plus tall person. If it has a fault, the stability fully extended is not as great as some but for the price, stability is good and can be enhanced by use of the supplied "stone bag" which hooks under the central column. The central column is a work of art ! It can be raised by about 40cm but that's to be expected. The wonder is that it can be detached and reassembled at virtually any angle and can be extended to reach out to that beetle that won't pick a leaf at the edge of the border. If you want, you can rotate the column by 180 degrees and scrape the ground surface to get that special perspective. And I nearly left out that the legs will splay from normal position to almost flat. This is a super piece of equipment and the price is all the more surprising for that.
