The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is an easy-to-use standard zoom lens that can cover a large zoom area ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm portrait-length telephoto. The EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM incorporates Canon's highest standards of precision optics. The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, combining outstanding image performance and ultimate operability with dust and moisture resistant construction. Canon's ring-type USM gives silent but quick AF, along with full-time manual focus. Moreover, with dust- and moisture-resistant construction, this is a durable yet sophisticated lens that meets the demands of advanced amateur photographers and professional photographers alike. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.).
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.
Lightweight and versatile
The EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM offers a 4.3x zoom ratio, from wide angle to medium telephoto. It is highly portable, weighing just 670g.
The f/4 maximum aperture of the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is fixed throughout the lens' focal-length range, so shutter speeds will not change as the lens is zoomed.
The EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM features Canon's three-stop Image Stabilizer (IS), making it ideal for handheld work. IS permits the use of shutter speeds up to three stops slower than normal, with no perceptible increase in image blur from camera shake.
Super UD and aspherical lens elements
The lens incorporates a Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass element to eliminate secondary chromatic aberrations. Aspherical lens elements correct for spherical aberrations. The result is crisp, high-contrast, undistorted optical performance throughout the zoom range, without colour fringing at high-contrast edges.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
A petal shaped hood and soft case are included.

Excellent all-round lens
About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens:
I've had my sight set on this lens for quite a while before getting it, having researched all possible reviews I could find. I haven't regretted this investment not even slightly. It is the perfect all-round, multi-purpose, standard-zoom lens, producing high quality, sharp images. Perfect for street fotography and portraits, giving consistent results. I'd certainly recommend this lens, if you are looking for a great all-round lens.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought as main lens for a 5D MkII, after much deliberation about suitability compared to an independent lens make. Lighter weight than an equivalent f2.8 option was the deciding factor in the end coupled to good pricing at the time of cashback.I had been hesitant, given the mixed reviews I had read, although I had been interested in this lens for a number of years. However, I have not been disappointed. Results with the 5D have been outstanding, landscapes smooth and pin sharp to infinity at 100% on screen, even when hand held, so the IS clearly works well and appears to be a cut above lenses of a lower price point with IS. Build quality is superb, the only drawbacks being the need to extend to zoom (unlike the internal zoom of say a 17-40), no zoom lock and weight and bulk. The zooming is a minor point and I am not aware of any other equivalent lens that does anything different, given how it needs to be constructed for this focal length and as the zoom is stiffer than on cheaper Canon lenses, zoom creep isn't as big an issue as it could be, although a zoom lock would be nice, given the independents seem to be able to achieve that consistently. At 650g it is heavy compared to a kit lens on a consumer SLR, but as a high spec lens it is actually light and is well balanced and handles well on a body of the size and weight of a 5D.You need to be aware that when moving into full-frame with this lens, it is really wide and you may need to upgrade your filters as a result, but that conversely it doesn't have the same depth of field as say a 17-40 used as a standard lens on crop, so you need to watch focusing, as at infinity there is a tendency for some softness in the immediate foreground unless care is taken. The AF is excellent, producing quite astonishing results on grab shots of birds some distance away. All in all an excellent purchase, which has produced outstanding results and is a good walkabout lens for general use.
Fabulous all rounder
About Me Professional
I work as a professional photographer and use a variety of cameras. This lens is fabulous all rounder and when I have to a travel light, but need to prepare for all eventualities, this is the lens I take. There is no magic "one lens fits all" right now, but this one covers many bases. The focal length provides a bit more reach than other similar lenses, however, some caution should be used when working at the 24-28mm end as the lens does exhibit some distortion (as many lenses do at the wide end). A bit of knowledge and skill and you can make it work well though.Constant aperture zoom - this is useful because when you zoom in, the aperture does not reduce as with some lenses, which means that you would need to adjust your ISO or shutter speed when working in Manual mode.Cam lens - I have never seen another zoom lens like this, but it works so well for video. You zoom in and adjust the focus to your subject, you can now pull back the zoom and frame accordingly and your shot will remain in perfect focus. Try it on any other zoom lens like a 24-70L and you will see that the focus point will change. There are digital ways of doing this on the camera too, but none that work whilst filming. I like to just keep my cameras rolling on a shoot, fewer clips to match with audio later. Optically the lens is sharp and has a nice level of contrast. Vignetting is evident at f4 at the wide end on a full frame camera but not unpleasant, also it can be removed easily in post. On a crop body, the lens exhibits no vignetting at all.Bokeh is rendered nicely and the diaphragm blades give a nice rounded feel across all focal lengths. The autofocus is as fast as anything I have ever used in this focal length. Almost instant. The OS system is quiet, but when using a camera mounted microphone, it is evident. It works particularly well when mounted on a monopod, it does a very convincing job for on the spot interviews in tight spaces.Ergonomically, it feels very nice well weighted and substantial, however it is a good deal lighter than the 24-70 2.8L. Weather sealing is a nice touch, but I have never found it an issue with any non sealed lenses in bad weather anyway.Slight lens creep does happen when you are walking around for long periods, but it is not a major concern.I work in stills and video and I find that for 75% of the time, I use this lens without ever feeling the need to change out the lens for another. If you are looking for a lens, please give this one serious consideration, it is a very useful lens.

About Me Semi-Professional
I wanted to buy this lens for a while but wasn't sure if it would be worth the investment.I have to say that I have no regrets and this lens has only been off my camera a few times and that is only when I want the DOF from my 50mm f1.4.

The All Rounder
By Fernando Pablo
This comes from a Nikon user. I used this lens for couple of days and I was truly amazed to see its capabilities. It is a complete all rounder lens, if you are shooting in daylight. The f/4 works brilliantly for portraits, the sharpness of this lens truly amazing and the focusing is quick.

Is this the best mid-range zoom ever?
By Blackbird Singing
It might well be. Condsidering its focal-length range, constant f/4 aperture, superb build-quality, image-stabilization, instant silent auto-focus and, above all, its ability to produce wonderful photographs, yes, it might well be the best mid-range zoom produced so far.A zoom lens of any kind is always a combination of compromises. This lens is no different, but it represents a combination of some of the best choices that have to be made in reaching the final compromise. Its focal-length range goes from adeqhately wide-angle (on a full-frame) to useful telephoto. I always found 28mm to be wide enough on film SLRs, so this lens delivers extra. 105mm is pretty good for a mid-range zoom and has the added security of IS on this lens. The fixed f/4 maximum aperture is again more than adequate. Increasing a lens to f/2.8 adds only one stop at a huge increase of weight and price. For one stop it's not worth it - f/2.8 is not fast enough - if you want more aperture, get a good prime lens. This lens' maximum aperture is very good for a zoom.Build-quality is wonderful - this lens is a pleasure to use, to handle, to just have on your camera.Auto-focus is fast and silent. Image-stabilization is excellent - watch it work in the viewfinder and see the difference it makes to your images.I've used this lens on full-frame and cropped cameras. It's sharper than an EF 17-40L on a 50D and 500D; it's sharper and more robust than an EF 28-135 on a 5D Mk II - the colours are better too.The end result has to be the photographs. This lens produces pleasing results - the most pleasing yet for a zoom lens in this focal-length range. Need I say more?
