Comments about Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens:

I use this lens on a 550D body. On this body it works out at roughly 50mm focal length.
It is a very sharp lens with good contrast and a neutral colour balance.
Build quality is better than the 50mm f1.8 (it has a metal mount and feels heavier) but still in that kind of league.
The focus is very quick and accurate. The motor noise is noticeable but not really an issue unless you are in a quiet environment, and even then it's only if focusing between near and far subjects or if the focus is hunting.
The only problem I have with the lens is the chromatic aberration (purple and yellow fringing) on highlights which is noticeable even at normal viewing magnification. You can correct this in software afterwards but it adds to the workload. Lightroom 3 does not have a built in profile to correct this lens so you have to do it manually.
If you can live with that then you will get some good quality images with this lens. It's good for isolating subjects from the background, although bokeh fans will notice that out of focus highlight spots are rendered hexagonal. This doesn't bother me though.
Overall it's a useful lens to own and it's fun to just use it without carrying your zoom and travel light. It makes you work a little harder for the image and is good for practising the art of composition.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens:

This is a great lens, unfortunately I did not keep it as I didn't think it was wide enough for my use.

Beside that the lens is amazing, so fast focus the images come out super sharp.

Only downside is it's not USM so its felt really loud on the autofocus.

It felt like it was the best lens to replace my 50mm on the everyday walkaround lens.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens:

This lens has become my favourite lens and is permanently attached to my Canon EOS 60D.

It's fantastic value for the money and the 35mm focal length, on a cropped sensor, gives you a great angle of view which is similar to a 50mm lens in the days of my film photography.

People complain about the shape of the Bokeh but I love the pentagonal shape and I'm going to take some photos to highlight it when I get a chance.

The other complaint people have is the wasp like noise of the focus motor. Yes it's noisier than my USM lenses but it's not going to scare small children or animals. The way some people talk about it you'd think it was as noisy as a road drill, it's not! I don't even notice it now.

This lens is crisp, clear and very sharp. It's great to play with the depth of field which is very fine when used close up.

I read many reviews before committing to buy this lens and it seemed to come out tops against the 28mm and the 50mm canons (Cheaper End). I'm glad I made this choice.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens:

I bought this as a replacement to a 50mm lens to use with my Canon 40D. It's very light, surprisingly well made and very sharp. A great all round standard lens for crop DSLR's that works just as well on my Eos film slr.

          Consider this before the 50mm1.8!

          By Paulios

          from Stafford

          Pros

          • beautiful shallow depth of field
          • lovely indoor photos without flash
          • useful field of view on cropped framed cameras

          Cons

          • price (compared to the 50mm f1.8)

          Best Uses

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens:

I'd decided to get my new 500D with the kit lens (18-55mm) as the price was good and by all accounts it wasn't a bad starter lens. However, I'd already decided that a fast prime lens would probably be needed as I love shallow depth of field and I hate using flash for candid indoor shots. I'd considered the 50mm f1.8 as it was much cheaper however the field of view was a bit too 'zoomed in' for me on a crop frame camera such as the 500d. While the 35mm f2 is over twice the price, it has a much more useful field of view, the build quality is much better and it's almost as fast. I have no regrets buying this. It's the lens that stays on my camera 90% of the time and it lets me take lovey photos without much previous photography experience.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens:

I have 3 Canon zoom lenses and like taking street photography and found the 35mm prime lens used on a digital camera gives me roughly 56mm which is near to a standard lens. Very easy to use and quite unobtrusive and light and the sharpness is excellent.
It has brought my photography to a new level
