This high-performance lens was designed with portability and handling ease in mind. One super UD-glass element - whose characteristics are similar to fluorite - and one UD-glass element result in sharp pictures from corner-to corner. The lens also has a built-in hood and a detachable tripod mount. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). Compact lightweight super-telephoto
This high-performance lens was designed with portability and ease of handling in mind. The EF 400mm f/5.6L USM features a UD (ultra dispersive) element and one super-UD element, whose characteristics are similar to fluorite. The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Best Economic compromise.
Having use an image stabilised 100-400 for a couple of years that struggles for sharpness at 400mm it was a gamble to go for this old tech fixed 400mm but I am pleased that I did. Pin sharpness, hand held, is straightforward in good light although using it on a 7D with it's noise issues over 800 ISO is not ideal in poorer light conditions. if you don't want to or can't spend the money on it's more expensive family members this is a great, economic compromise lens that I can heartily recommend for birding and I have yet to try the 1.4x adapter which the scuttlebutt on the web tells me works well using the tape trick with autofocus...... We'll see!

Top quality Canon L series lens
Here is a pro quality, L series Canon lens capable of producing pin sharp images.Light weight and easy to handhold with ultra fast focussing, it is a great lens for capturing those elusive in- flight shots such as the puffin coming in to land with a beakfull of sand eels! I thought long and hard about buying the 100-400 zoom, but in the final analysis decided to go for optimum image quality.Highly recommended.
About Me Professional
Bottom line is that this is a superb lens, with sharpness and speed of autofocus as good as it gets. Like any kit, you need to work within it's limitations, which means for this lens that you will need a fast shutter speed if you are hand holding as there is no IS and it will lose it's usefulness in low light due to the relatively small max aperture of 5.6. Take this into account and you have a superb lens that is light in weight and costs a fraction of the F4 and 2.8 alternatives.

An absolutly great Lens for Wildlife Photography, an absolute must for anyone who enjoy bird photography!Image is very sharp right out of the camera with great contrast.Though to get the best out this Lens i would recommend getting a good stable tripod. If your really into Wildlife Photography you will love this Lens!
Excellent lens and top value for money
I bought the 400mm lens about a year ago specifically for wildlife photography where I need plenty of reach and image quality is paramount. I have seen plenty of wildlife pictures taken with zoom lenses and my view is that the Canon 400mm lens beats most of them. The quality of the 400mm lens is top draw and I would recommend this lens to any Canon user who wants to get into wildlife photography. The lens is very well constructed, fast to focus, produces lovely bokeh and the image quality is excellent. It is considerably cheaper than a Canon 500mm lens and is infinitely more portable. Of course the Canon 500mm has image stablilisation and for reach and quality is the the choice lens of the two. However, the 400mm is far easier to carry round and I would not be without it. The biggest drawback to the 400mm lens is the lack of image stabilisation but since I often use it in a hide or on a monopod it is not much of an issue. The overall quality of this lens is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone for wildlife photography.

This lens has proved to be an inspiration to get out there and take photos, the results are great, i would recommend it. It is light in weight, gives sharp images both on auto and manual focus, what more do you want.

Usual canon L series construction feels solid and substantial. Built in hood is great so far. Focus is fast but not instant. Picture quality is excellent, with ideal out of focus blur (bokeh?)
