The Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM Lens is an extremely compact, fast, pancake lens that is part of the new STM family of Canon lenses. Incorporating the new Canon STM stepping-motor technology for quiet, accurate focus operation, the Canon 40mm f2.8 prime is perfect for capturing sharp photos that stand out whilst providing a professional and natural looking background blur. The Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM Lens can be mounted on both full-frame (EF) and cropped sensor cameras (EF & EF-S). When mounted onto a Canon camera with an APS-C sized sensor the field of view is equivalent to a focal length of about 60mm in 35mm format. The Canon EF 40mm f2.8 comes in a portable, lightweight package and is suitable for a wide variety of subjects, from discreet portraits to landscapes. More
February 2013 - As a Canon shooter who uses prime lenses primarily I was excited by the announcement from Canon last year that they were releasing a 40mm 2.8 prime lens. Typically I shoot weddings with a 35mm and 85mm lens combination so the focal length wasn’t too far off one of my standard camera combinations.Read the review of the Canon 40mm f2.8 on the Wex Blog... »
Canon's STM lenses
Canon's new line of STM (stepping motor) lenses are specifically designed for shooting video with the camera's Movie Servo AF mode. The first STM lens was released along with the Canon EOS 650D and has been designed to work with the 650D's AF so that they're fast, accurate and silent. The result is a movie that sounds professional without the sound of the noisy AF motor in the background.
Extremely compact and portable design
Never be without your EOS. The compact pancake EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is very thin, so you’ll always be able to take your DSLR with you.
Smooth and quiet AF, STM focussing for movies
Fast, accurate autofocusing ensures pin-sharp images even in tough conditions. Movie Servo AF with STM uses stepping-motor technology for smooth, quiet autofocus when filming on compatible Canon DSLRs.
Useful low light shooting
An f/2.8–22 aperture range provides control over depth of field, giving you the freedom to restrict or extend focus as required. A fast maximum aperture allows hand-held shooting in low light without using flash.
Great image quality designed for travel versatility
A versatile 40mm focal length is great for travel. Tackle everything from portraits to landscape and street photography. Great image quality right across the frame, thanks to an aspherical lens design and Super Spectra coatings.

A Good Buy
About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM Lens:
Bought this lens after much deliberation as I had to leave my 60D and bulky lenses at home on a short train break. This lens now gives me a 60D which is usable when luggage space is at a premium. But better than that I have found it good for my interest in photography in churches for getting good shots of detailed items. It also gives good shots for street photography or architectural detail. However the FL on an aps sensor is at 64mm eqv and so is limited in this respect. Pics are sharp as see examples. The only thing that is different and it is not a fault of the lens is that I miss the bulk of my sigma lenses which give a good handhold on the camera. If stability is an issue use a tripod.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great little lens

This a good lens to take out and about. Its size means its unobtrusive in crowds and great as a backup if mainly using longer lens. Recommend having one in your bag.

Sharp little lens

About Me Semi-Professional
Great lens. Superior to the 50mm equivalent. Both the f1.8 (due to its improved aperture blades/Bokeh) and f1.4 (for price). Even at 100% pixel peep this lens is sharp. I love using it. If I could have the same image quality in a 20mm lens I'd be one happy togger. I feel no need to buy the L standard 50mm for doing weddings as this fits the bill for me and f2.8 is as wide as I'd choose to go. Give this lens a whirl and see how great Canons new STM line up seems to be. (P.s - this is the only STM lens I have, for now at least)
cracking little lens

purchased as wanted a lightweight all purpose lens for everyday use whilst on a short trip away. found it to be excellent, lightweight on the 20d camera body compact to fit in a small shoulder bag with everyday items sunscreen etc. and produced great sharp images. very pleased with purchase and it will be put to a lot of use. Delivery speed lightening from WEX arrived following morning and really well packaged.

Canon EF 40mm 2.8 STM Lens
I purchased this lens for my 6D and its excellent. I haven't stopped using it yet. Works well with 2.5 Extension Tube.
Great video and overall lens
I bought this lens for the low price and for the reviews of a sharp focussing, quiet focus lens and it doesn't fault on any of these. The STM focussing is incredibly quiet and quick, and without using the autofocus, the manual ring is incredibly ergonomic being directly on the front and side of the lens. Using it for video is great, with it having little working parts on shaky shots and having as strict focus as it does.Good use for film, panoramas (if you can deal with focal length) and macro.

It's a really great lens - not just because it's compact and light, but because it's better than my all purpose Canon 15-85 lens for shooting with flash people at events.By the way, if you are lumbered with photographing people at parties or whatever, you can forget the fancy stuff with the EF 40 mm - just stick your camera on P (or event auto!) and with a decent / relatively decent flash unit, point, shoot and obtain consistently good pictures. All you have to think about is the composition and not worry about technical issues. I use a 7D - great camera!
The perfect travel lens
Always loved pancake lenses ever since I owned an old manual focus Pentax lens back in the 90's.This is a great little lens when paired with a full-frame camera. I use it with a 6D as a lightweight carry around kit, even it it doesn't quite make the combination pocket size. Sometimes you still want to use a decent SLR rather than a snapshot compact, but don't want to take a full kit.The lens is nice and sharp, contrast is good and for the price it is a bargain.

About Me Professional
This product fits perfectly in a pocket when a large telephoto lens is fitted and is quickly changed over for sharp close up's such as flowers, insects, fungi etc. Also great for landscapes, when you have just a telephoto lens with you.
shorty forty-great purchase
Bought this lens after lots of research. It was between this and a 50mm f1.8.I am very impressed with the sharpness of the images I have taken with it so far.Because it is a fixed focal length it makes you think about your composition much more, rather than just zooming in or out.It looks very neat when fitted to my Canon EOS 450D and it is a very light set up.I have had no problems with failure of the autofocus as some people have reported.I am very pleased with my purchase from WEX Photographic.
