The Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM is an extremely compact, fast, pancake lens that is part of the new STM family of Canon lenses. Incorporating the new Canon STM stepping-motor technology for quiet, accurate focus operation, the Canon 40mm f2.8 prime is perfect for capturing sharp photos that stand out whilst providing a professional and natural looking background blur. When mounted onto a Canon camera with an APS-C sized sensor the field of view is equivalent to a focal length of about 60mm in 35mm format. The Canon EF 40mm f2.8 comes in a portable, lightweight package and is suitable for a wide variety of subjects, from discreet portraits to landscapes. More
- As a Canon shooter who uses prime lenses primarily I was excited by the announcement from Canon last year that they were releasing a 40mm 2.8 prime lens. Typically I shoot weddings with a 35mm and 85mm lens combination so the focal length wasn’t too far off one of my standard camera combinations.

Extremely compact and portable design
Never be without your EOS. The compact pancake EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is very thin, so you’ll always be able to take your DSLR with you.
Smooth and quiet AF, STM focussing for movies
Fast, accurate autofocusing ensures pin-sharp images even in tough conditions. Movie Servo AF with STM uses stepping-motor technology for smooth, quiet autofocus when filming on compatible Canon DSLRs.
Useful low light shooting
An f/2.8–22 aperture range provides control over depth of field, giving you the freedom to restrict or extend focus as required. A fast maximum aperture allows hand-held shooting in low light without using flash.
Great image quality designed for travel versatility
A versatile 40mm focal length is great for travel. Tackle everything from portraits to landscape and street photography. Great image quality right across the frame, thanks to an aspherical lens design and Super Spectra coatings.

Great compact fast focus light lens!
By Millfield Media guy
I use primarily for video - interviews when hand held - good in low light thanks to f2.8Focuses fast - like its bigger brother the 18-135mm STM lens - both used on my Canon 70DThe lightweight makes it superb for hand held video interviews, with a Rode Video Mic Pro for audioIts only issue is that, despite being STM, the focus is not totally silent like the 18-135mm STM, and can get picked up on the microphone in very quiet filming situations - this is why I give it 4* and not 5*

I surprised by the number of variable situations that the lens can be used. An ideal size for carrying in your camera bag all the time for the unexpected shot.
Just slides easily in your pocket

A Good Buy
Bought this lens after much deliberation as I had to leave my 60D and bulky lenses at home on a short train break. This lens now gives me a 60D which is usable when luggage space is at a premium. But better than that I have found it good for my interest in photography in churches for getting good shots of detailed items. It also gives good shots for street photography or architectural detail. However the FL on an aps sensor is at 64mm eqv and so is limited in this respect. Pics are sharp as see examples. The only thing that is different and it is not a fault of the lens is that I miss the bulk of my sigma lenses which give a good handhold on the camera. If stability is an issue use a tripod.
