Please Note: This model is now discontinued and a new version is now available: Canon EOS 1D X Digital SLR Camera Body. The Canon EOS 1D Mark 4 is a high speed, professional Digital SLR developed on the back of feedback from photographers. Featuring a redesigned 16.1 megapixel APS-H CMOS sensor & an incredible 45-point Auto-Focus (AF) System with 39 f2.8 sensitive cross-type points, the Canon 1D Mark IV delivers a wide selection of precise focus areas, allowing consistent AF on both static and moving subjects. In addition, the improved AI Servo II AF offers more precision when tracking moving objects by using the power of a dedicated microprocessor, resulting in great accuracy in low contrast or bright conditions, even when shooting at 10fps. The standard ISO range of the Canon 1D Mark IV is 100-12,800, with an extended range of 50-102,400. More

In a light and durable full magnesium alloy body that provides protection against knocks, the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV Digital SLR has 76 rubber seals fitted around the controls and cover seams, making it dust and water resistant when used together with Canon's range of weather-resistant EF lenses and Speedlite EX flash units. The body has been slightly redesigned, and the buttons reshaped and given a more definitive "click" when depressed.
The Canon EOS 1D Mark 4 Digital SLR also features a 920,000 dot VGA resolution Clear View II LCD that enables the photographer to review images in any condition. Canon has filled the gap between the LCD panel and the protective cover with a photo-elastic material, reducing the light reflection and resulting in a clear display. The cover has been replaced by reinforced glass (previously acrylic) giving the screen strong, scratch resistant protection.
The EOS-1D Mark IV also features Canon's standard EOS integrated cleaning system, which automatically eliminates dust on the sensor and ensures a reliable image quality, even when shooting in the most demanding conditions.
The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV can capture 1080p HD video at 30, 25 and 24 frames per second, and 720p footage at 60 and 50 frames per second. The digital SLR camera is completely compatible with PAL, NTSC and native 1080 / 24p cinematic frame rates. In addition, the camera gives photographers full control over depth of field by offering full manual exposure.
Featuring a programmable button to enable quick movie shooting, the Canon EOS 1D Mk IV enables photographers to record HD video at the touch of a button. Also featuring a mini HDMI output, video and images can be viewed directly on compatible HD-ready TVs with the EOS 1D Mk 4.
Ensuring that you get exactly what you want from your camera, the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV is fully customisable. Auto Exposure (AE) and Flash Exposure (FE) micro adjustments mean that photographers can fine tune exposure settings to personal preference, or to exactly match another camera. By saving the preferred profile to the memory card, you can then transfer it to any 1D Mk IV camera you use.
The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV also makes it possible to add copyright information directly in the camera. Photographers can embed details within each shot removing the necessity for retrospective data insertion and making it even quicker to get your shots to your desk. There is also an integrated microphone which allows the recording of audio notes to accompany each image, directly benefitting photographers who wish to keep a record of the content of each image as they shoot.

Comments about Canon EOS 1D MK IV Digital SLR Camera Body:
Very precise focussing and clear ttl view great for animals on the move. Good fps captures detailed behaviour. Upto 7 exposures in aeb plus high usable iso speeds cover all eventualities in difficult lighting situations and provides great basis for HDR images. Tough build is must for wildlife - I feel confident this body will take a lot of punishment. Feels well constructed and behaves impeccably - I am more than happy with it's performance so far.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Superior focussing ideal for wildlife photography - allows me to catch behaviour I previously missed. Also great for Hdr with an AEB facility allowing up to 7 shots. Great to hold, easy to use and very tough.

About Me Casual Photographer
The high speed frame capture is ideal for birds in flight, I've had some really great shots with this camera . The fast auto focus is perfect for those unexpected wildlife moments , I miss far fewer shots now ! I'm more confident of results with this camera than any other I've used.If you can afford it, buy it , you won't regret it.

About Me Photo Enthusiast
I use this mainly for airshows and motorsport. Fantastic peace of kit. It does cost alot, but worth every penny. I've wanted a 1d mk4 for a long time and finaly went for it. I'm not regretting it. Find it to be no heavier than my 7D with a battery grip and two batteries. I was looking at a 5D mk3. Once you've got the battery grip, the 1D mk4 is only a little more and you get the bonus of the 1.3x crop sensor for sports, fantastic image quality and a pro spec body that will handle the British weather. Handles high ISO noise very well and retains alot of detail. Wish I had got one sooner.
This is going to be hard to beat.

About Me Pro Photographer
After two to three months of using this one it is now my work horse. I use it all day and every day from sharp and well lit product photography, through soft focus portraits, to high speed night time sports and long telephoto wild life. So far it hasn't let me down. It truly is the one that has it all, and even with new products being launched each and every month this one is going to be hard to beat. Some reviewers mention the weight. Yes, it is heavy but to be honest that's part of its appeal. It's built well to withstand the normal rigours of dashing from one job to the next where sometimes care and consideration for the equipment we use can take a bit of a back seat. It means it's going to LAST!If you can, buy it. You'll never ever regret it. [...]
Superb piece of kit
I decided to upgrade from the Canon 7D a couple of months ago mainly because of the high levels of noise in the 7D which you get as soon as you start to crank up the ISO (400 and above). I use the camera for wildlife photography. The 1D is three times the price of the 7D so it is a significant investment. I have had some strong results with the 7D but I wanted a better hit rate of images hence the upgrade. I have to say I have been more than impressed with the 1D which I consider to be a superb piece of kit. The autofocusing system is amazing and I am getting a higher percentage of pin sharp shots than I did with the 7D. The colour and detail in the images is excellent. Also, the noise levels are much lower than the 7D and I regularly shoot at ISO 400 with minimal noise and loss of detail. I can also shoot at higher ISOs and get very strong results with the 1D. I have to say for my wildlife photography I have had some superb results since I bought the 1D. The build quality is top notch too. Yes it's a big chunky body to carry around but when you're using it with heavy long lenses it really doesn't make much difference. Yes it's expensive but I don't regret the upgrade for a second. Highly recommended.

Top of the pile right now

A big heavy well built weather sealed brick. The pro build quality is evident, for close up wildlife the noise from the shutter is painfully loud but the fps and autofocus performance is as good as it gets for the time being.

As an owner of the 7D and 5D MkII it was a hard decision as to whether I really needed this camera. After some soul searching I went ahead and got it and boy am I happy!!It is a camera that all should aspire to getting. I appreciate it is not the cheapest but boy it is worth every penny! My one and only "gripe" of all Canon cameras are the straps they provide, I always swap mine for a neoprene type which I find more comfortable.

I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from using my 50D and although it is a big jump from a mid-range model I am very pleased that I did. The 1D MK IV is a huge step up and I mainly shoot sports and wildlife which in my opinion this camera was designed for. What I like about the camera is the 10fps and quality you can get in low light conditions. I can now shoot at local football matches that I just couldn't before. Although setting up the AF Custom Functions is complex and I am still getting used to setting it up. The 1D MK IV doesn't disappoint and I'm sure if you buy one you'll be happy like me.
