The Canon EOS 7D is a digital SLR built on the needs of photographers - in fact, in the design process Canon consulted over 5,000 photographers to ask them what they needed most from their camera. Featuring 18 megapixels and a 19-point cross-type AF sensor, the 7D combines great accuracy with even greater flexibility. AF settings can be customised, enabling both photographer and camera to quickly adapt to the scene. A new metering system, the Focus Colour Luminance (iFCL) intelligently measures focus, colour and luminance across 63 zones. There is a dual layer sensor which gathers information from each distinct zone to produce an accurate, consistent exposure. In addition the 7D offers an Integrated Speedlite Transmitter, allowing photographers to control external speedlites with no additional accessories and Full HD 1080 movie shooting. The Canon EOS 7D v2 firmware update is now available, see further details.   More

Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body Further Details

The Canon EOS 7D v2 firmware update is now available! 07/08/2012

The Canon Press Release
Firmware v2 now offers greater control of image settings and functionality, including a higher maximum RAW burst rate, now up to 25 RAW files or 130 JPEGs. Giving photographers greater control over images directly after capture, a new range of in-camera editing functions includes processing of RAW files, as well as the ability to easily adjust white balance, sharpness and Picture Style. Enhanced control over Auto ISO levels during both still and movie shooting now allows users to limit ISO speeds to within the native ISO 400-6,400 range, perfect for manipulating exposure in different situations.

During movie shooting, amateur videographers will also benefit from new manual control of audio levels, with the ability to choose from 64 different sound levels. New compatibility with Canon’s high-performance GPS unit, the GP-E2, enables photographers to track the locations of their images using longitude, latitude and altitude geo-tagging.

Canon EOS 7D firmware v2 – new features:

  • Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)
  • In-camera RAW image editing
  • In-camera Image Rating
  • In-camera JPEG resizing
  • Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)
  • Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording
  • GPS compatibility
  • File name customisation
  • Time zone settings
  • Faster scrolling of magnified images
  • Quick control screen during playback

Canon EOS 7D - Capture what you see
The Canon EOS 7D digital SLR features an Intelligent Viewfinder offering 100% frame coverage. For the first time, the EOS system offers 1.0x magnification, meaning photographers see a large, bright image. The transmissive LCD is incorporated within the viewfinder and allows photographers to decide which overlay feature - e.g. AF points, the spot metering circle and composition grid - is most useful to help frame the shot. The Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR is also the first in the EOS range to introduce a Dual-Axis Electronic Level (in both the viewfinder and on the LCD) that indicated both pitch and roll angles. This feature is especially useful when shooting landscapes to ensure a level horizon, or when used in conjunction with a Canon Tilt & Shift lens.

The Canon EOS 7D digital SLR has a 3" Clear View II LCD screen with a solid structure screen that has been designed to combat glare by removing the air-gap between the LCD's protective cover and the liquid crystal. Featuring a viewing angle of 160 degrees, the 3" LCD screen is effective even in bright light. An ambient light sensor on the side of the screen, like on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, can set brightness automatically depending on the environment.

Canon EOS 7D - Be creative
An Integrated Speedlite Transmitter means photographers can control external Speedlites with no additional accessories, making the Canon EOS 7D perfect for those looking to experiment with lighting. The built-in flash has been extensively upgraded and includes both wider flash coverage for focal lengths as wide as 15mm, and manual control.

Canon EOS 7D - Customise your camera
In keeping with Canon's endeavour to make the Canon EOS 7D the perfect tool for photographers, all the features and functions are customisable to the individual photographers needs. Frequently used functions and settings can be assigned to convenient controls, meaning valuable time can be saved when shooting critical moments.

Technical Jargon - What does it all mean?

EOS - Stands for Electro Optical System.

SLR - Stands for Single Lens Reflex: Means the camera has one lens that is used for both composing the frame and capturing the image to memory.

EF-S - Are designed specifically for cameras with an APS-format sensor, such as the Canon 1100D, 600D, etc. Cameras that support the Canon EF-S lens mount can also take the Canon EF lens mount. The 'S' stands for 'short back focus', which means that the rear element of the lens is closer to the image sensor.

APS-C - A type of digital camera sensor with an integral x1.6 magnification factor. This means that for all lenses (Canon, Sigma & Tamron) you have to x the focal length of your lens by the crop factor, which is 1.6 (Nikon 1.5). For example - Canon 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm. For a camera with a cropped sensor the field of view you actually get is 80mm.

CMOS - Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor – A type of image sensor used in many digital cameras.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body:

I purchased my 7D when they were first released, up until Canon released this camera non of the DSLR offerings met my needs, my 20D is a nice little camera and very convinient but a 35mm replacement it is not. In particular I wanted a fast frame rate and 8FPS hit the mark. Add to that the AF system and 18MP APS-C sensor it seemed to be a camera buit for me.
I was not dissapointed, the 7D delivers in spades, I really like the controls though some could perhaps be better placed but that is just my taste. The AF works really well particularly with moving subjects and is easily configured for the type of shots you are taking.
Version 2 software has added some extra features / improvements. I can't comment about in camera JPEG processing as I only shoot to RAW, indeed I don't understand why high end cameras include JPEG processing at all; I don't care how good the camera is at producing JPEG images, Photoshop et al will do the job better!
If you are in to wildlife photograpy this body is a first rate choice, sensor performance in low light is not as good as I might like, (its not bad though), but then the best wildlife photograpy is generally not done in low light so I have never really found this to be an issue.
DSLRs have improved greatly but even my 5D MkIII still falls short of good old 35mm especially in dynamic range. I look forward to the day that you can buy a DSLR body and only have to replace it because it has worn out.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body:

I am a novice but keen SLR user, this being my second SLR after a 600D. I have had help how best to navigate the controls and I have got some fantastic results. I like taking photos showing "as it is" - and I am extremely pleased so far. Next month I am using it in earnest on a safari and am very excited, last year I only had a Canon SX40. I have had a number of lessons in the past 12 months and feel that my skills have considerably developed. I hope that this camera will now become a trusted friend as I take it with me on my travels. It is rather heavy though - but this is a small price to pay for the quality of camera which you are getting. The shutter speed is incredible (I take a lot of moving shots) - and I would highly recommend. Other friends who are more experineced than I am, have been impressed both with the quality of the camera and my shots.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body:

I have a few cameras including a 5D mk 2 - but despite the lack of a full frame sensor this is the camera that I always reach for when shooting wildlife or sports.

This camera in many ways is superior to the 5d mk 2 - in particular its autofocus system which has 19 cross type af points compared to the 5d's 1 cross type! The autofocus is quick and precise and hasn't let me down yet - even when using cheaper other brand lenses.

Excellent range of features including 3 custom setting modes, self cleaning sensor and separate recording button for when using as an HD DSLR.

This camera - although 4 years old now will still give newer models a serious run for their money.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body:

I have been using a 1D mk2N for the quite a few years and as my circumstances have changed needed a lighter body to replace it. After a bit of research the 7D seemed to fit the bill, and I'm pleased to say that its turning out to be an excellent camera. I shoot a lot of Motorsport and the 7D is very quick, tracks well and is producing excellent results.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body:

Having had a 1D in both Mk.2N and Mk3 forms, I was wearing out camera shutters at an alarming rate and required a backup urgently. Having not been able to obtain a 1DX, I compromised and have found the EOS 7D to be an Honest to goodness work machine which produces excellent results. 'It does what it says it does on the side of the tin'...and more. recommended.
