Please Note: This model is now discontinued and a new version is now available: Canon PowerShot S110 Black Digital Camera. The Canon PowerShot S100 is the successor to the highly-acclaimed PowerShot S95 and offers the same full manual exposure controls (as found on SLRs and on the Canon PowerShot G12) and a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor in an even slimmer body. The S100 is a superb low-light performer and comes equipped with an ultra wide and bright 24mm f/2.0 lens with 5 x optical zoom. The new GPS tagging and Logger Function allows you to pinpoint where each photo was taken and gives you the ability to track your travels when you're on the move. As well as great stills, the Canon PowerShot S100 can record full 1080p HD video with stereo sound, making it an exceptional pocket-sized imaging tool. More
Canon's innovative HS System represents a cutting edge combination of high-sensitivity sensors and DIGIC processors working together to capture stunning images even in low light. Read more about the HS system here…
High-sensitivity 12.1 MP Canon CMOS sensor
The high-sensitivity 1/1.7 type CMOS sensor, developed using EOS DSLR sensor know-how, works in combination with the DIGIC 5 processor to deliver class leading image quality especially at higher ISO speeds and in low light.
HS System with DIGIC 5
The HS System is a powerful combination of the DIGIC 5 image processor, which is 6x more powerful than DIGIC 4, and a high-sensitivity CMOS sensor. It lets you shoot with low noise and high image quality even in low light up to ISO 6400 - reducing the need for flash or a tripod.
Versatile lens. Intelligent IS
A bright f/2.0 lens further extends your ability to shoot in darker conditions. A 24mm ultra-wide angle setting lets you take stunning landscapes and a flexible 5x zoom gets you up close. Intelligent IS automatically selects exactly the right optical Image Stabilizer setting from 7 possible modes to ensure sharp, detailed photos and videos.
Lens Control Ring, Noise Reduction control and RAW
The lens Control Ring allows quick access to functions such as zoom, aperture, shutter speed, focus or ISO. Make adjustments to the level of noise reduction applied to images or shoot in RAW format for post-processing in the supplied DPP software.
Embed valuable location information into your images every time you take a shot with GPS tagging. The GPS Logger function can record your position at set time intervals so you can review your entire journey on the supplied Map Utility software.
Full HD Movies, HDMI-CEC
Record superb, Full HD 1080p movies at 24fps with stereo sound. An HDMI-CEC mini connection allows for loss-less playback on a compatible HDTV.
7.5 cm (3.0”) PureColor II G LCD
A 460k dot bright and clear LCD features a tempered glass outer layer for strength and high visibility even when shooting in bright conditions.
High-speed Burst HQ
Thanks to the processing capabilities of DIGIC 5 you can capture full resolution split second action at 9.6fps in an 8-frame burst using High-speed Burst HQ mode.
Smart Auto, Multi-area WB
Smart Auto selects camera settings for you from 32 different scenes (21 in movies), automatically ensuring optimum results. Multi-area White Balance compensates for the presence of multiple light sources for natural results.
Optional Waterproof Case
Protect your camera underwater to depths of up to 40m with the optional WP-DC43 waterproof case.

Great camera, weak lens mechanism
Comments about Canon PowerShot S100 Black Digital Camera:
I have used the S100 for kite aerial photography and have also mounted it to a small quadcopter. The S100 is a quality product however the big let down is the weak lens mechanism that suffers from a common 'lens error' which I have suffered twice - the second time has required a Canon fix.Likes:SmallLightRawManual controlsHackable for aerial photography 'scripting' (look up SDM and CHDK)GPSImage qualityWide angleControls/buttons more sturdy than the S95Dislikes:ExpensiveFragile lens
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Fantastic pocket camera!
The video on the Wex site says it all. For the enthusiast, a DSLR with three lenses etc. only comes out for particular tasks. This is the perfect camera to put in your pocket EVERY time you go out. The Canon designers' story (see Wex website) shows how special this is, even if it is your main camera.
Brilliant all rounder
I bought the S100 as an upgrade to my S90, being tempted by the extra zoom and proper HD video recording. I was a little concerned the zoom might have compromised the image quality somewhat, but I needn't have worried. Images are superb, crisp with great colours. Better still, videos are so good that we no longer need our old DV camcorder. And its all packaged into something thats light and easily pocketable.I couldn't recommend them more, they are a brilliant little camera.
I do lots of off-the-cuff 'field' macro work (insect records etc) and the S100 is robust, light enough and great most of the time. It can miss focus *slightly* on complicated or shiny subjects even with the smallest AF window selected. Sometimes images are not as sharp as I'd like them to be, generally at close focus in low light. I often have to underexpose by 1/3 or 2/3 stop however I may just be too picky as it's only a compact! In reasonable light, at any sensible distance it's great. I love the ring and dial functions, the battery life is good (though as it empties a 'full' battery indicator to 'empty' can be a dozen shots!)In summary, I wanted a camera to use, not an SLR to lug about when I needed it. The S100 is now on my belt 95% of the time and Ive taken close to 3000 shots in the last 6 months, I think that says everything.

I've bought this as an upgrade on my S95 and as a supplement to my DSLR. Having said that, since buying the S100 I've decided to travel light and make this my only camera on my next holiday. Incredibly compact - bought not only on camera spec, but also on advantage of fitting even into the smallest evening bag.Absolutely delighted with the results.

Gets better with use.
from West Midlands
Needed a quality small, lightweight compact for use when walking and climbing that could also be used day to day. This has been excellent so far and the only con is the poor battery life- bought a spare Hahnel HL-5L. This camera gets better the more I understand its intracacies but Auto is also superb. Low light indoors is amazing and flash is not generally needed. Video is also excellent.Highly recommended.
