Comments about Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun:

I have this flash in my kit as it is small & light to carry and comes in handy for the occasions when the D3100 camera's inbuilt flash is not powerful enough. Also gives better flash coverage for my wide angle zoom lens which the inbuilt flash does not provide.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun:

bit of an 'available light' enthusiast but wanted to see what this could add to what my D80 does on its own.
i certainly haven't tested it to destruction.
concerned about one angle bounce but the side lighting in portrait isn't bad.

Comments about Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun:

My SB-400 stopped working after 14 months. Used infrequently, never dropped or damaged in anyway. Sent to Nikon for repair and their estimate was £95 to replace the circuit board. I declined the estimate. Mine might have been from a dodgy batch but I'm disappointed that the build quality wasn't up to the usual Nikon standard. I'm going to see what else is available before buying another SB-400 as a replacement.Having said that - when it worked it was a simple to use and an effective flash for the money. I would recommend it to a friend as an entry level flash but I'd warn them of the above.

                • bounce flash for more naturla shots

                Cons

                • only tilts upwards bounce flash only in landscape

                Best Uses

Comments about Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun:

The reason to buy one of these, rather than using the flash built into your camera, is to use bounce flash. This will give you much more natural looking shots when you have to use the flash.

The only downside in this regard is that the reflector will only tilt upwards. This limits you to landscape orientation for any bounce flash shots, unless you want to tape a sheet of paper to the flash to act as a reflector.

There may be fancier flash units available out there with more features, but the SB-400 is light, compact, does exactly what I need it to do and is not too expensive.

Comments about Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun:

It doesn't have the flexibility of the bigger Speedlights, but the small size & weight means that it is always in my camera bag so it is to hand when I need it (which is often when I wouldn't have necessarily expected to). Extremely simple & straightfoward to operate it gives very nice results on my D50 & D60.

                    Well worth the money.

Comments about Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun:

I love my little SB400, it's so easy to use... and so small, compared with other flash guns. The hotshoe is metal (more durable) and it comes with a custom fitted case. great...

The front part of the flash bends upwards, to bounce light of the ceiling, which makes portraits look more natural... and all (basic) manual features are adjusted in the camera.

If you want to buy a no nonsence, small flashgun for your Nikon, it's great.
