Having wanted to purchase a light meter of some kind for quite a good while, I was undecided about about buying a thoroughly modern 'digital' light meter such as the Sekonic L-308 ligt meter or one styled on more traditioanl lines in the form of the L-398A. Having researched both products a bit, I eventually plumped for the L-398A. It has a solid quality feel (unlike most of the much cheaper-to-produce plastic bodied models), requires no batteries and will quite possibly provide a lifetime of service. This is a light meter for 'grown-ups' if you follow me, and creates an air of professionalism, rather than looking and feeling like some kind of plastic-bodied toy. If you perhaps prefer L.E.D. or 'digital' displays, then this meter is probably not for you, however, if you want raw information about exposure and scene brightness which is clearly displayed, then the Sekonic L-398A is defintely a light meter meter to consider. The Sekonic L-398 is a pleasure to use and gives a complete overview of all shutter-speed/aperture exposure combinations avaialble for any given lighting. Don't forget that this light meter doesn't permit 'flash metering', however, unless one has a studio or uses a lot of flash, for most practical photography, the Sekonic L-398A is a superb light meter

I've been using this light-meter for many years and, whilst there are all sorts of fancy gadgets out there with special electronic features that will allegedly transform the quality of your photography, I will choose this light meter of any one of the newer devices any day of the week. Yes, it requires a slightly different methodology in terms of how to use it effectively to determine your shooting settings. Yes, it may require that you will have to use your brain a bit more to get the 'look' that you desire. I can say without any doubt, however, that I get faster, more accurate and far more aesthetically pleasing results from using this old light meter than any of the best of the newer models... without exception!

These units were used to teach us about taking light readings when I went to film school (even though there were far more advanced units available at the time... I can understand why they made us learn this way, and if anyone ever came to me for advice on how to get started in photography now, this would be my first recommendation to them...
